“Great service, but rooms are run down”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

This hotel is well located and looks great from the outside, but the rooms are quite dated and run down. Cleanliness was not great as there was mould around the bath.
The service was excellent and all staff was very helpful and polite. Swiming pool was great and had a nice view. Food wasn't great and pool bar is very overpriced!

Dear multiculturaltravele,

I would like to thank you for sharing your experience at The Victoria on Trip Advisor. Your time and contribution have been greatly appreciated.

Your comments are valuable and important for us. We are extremely disappointed to hear that your stay with us did not live up to your expectations and would like to apologise on behalf of all the team. Rest assured that as much as your praise, particularly towards the staff, has been extended to all concerned, your constructive comments will surely not be ignored.

It is good to note that the hotel has embarked on a series of major projects, hence to ensure the best quality service at all times. Earlier this year two new lifts were installed, and we just finished upgrading the AC system and redecorating The Penny Black Bar.

Other two large ongoing projects are the WiFi system which will be installed and running by the end of next month, and the total refurbishment of the Indoor Pool Facilities, which will surely enhance the area for the upcoming winter season. We are also currently ongoing a refurbishment programme to upgrade the hotel public areas and the private rooms, there again with the scope to meet and exceed our guests' experience.

Once again we apologise for the inconvenience caused during your stay and hope that our commitment to continuously improve will make you change your mind to re-visit our hotel in the future.

Sincerely,

Kevin Callus

Charles at reception - what a guy!! Charles 2 in the hotel restaurant- what a guy!
Beautiful room, spoiled by the views and close proximity of adjoining balconies and hospital.
Excellent internet facilities (free) in two separate locations. A/C not the best, fridge in room was a blessing and easily stocked up by using the large supermarket less than five minutes away. Pools always busy, difficult to find a free lounger. Bought a three dinner voucher offer, best dining experience to date on holiday- even for a vegetarian- fantastic food.

As with any grade of hotel (one star to six star) you are going to find things that you do not like or agree with. However, I have just spent my second holiday based at The Victoria Hotel and have nothing but good to say about it.

Yes ! there were points that I found that could be better but I honestly think that this hotel is a splendid place to stay.

The staff are excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. they go out their way to make your stay value for money.

The hotel's location is great. Nice and quiet and with good views from the rooms or the roof terraces. There's a hill to climb from sea level but if you look you will find easier routes rather than the shortest.

I will be returning next year.

First off, I should qualify this review by stating that I did not choose to stay here. I had booked and pre-paid for Rocca Nettuno suites, which had chosen to send me here, because they didn't like the fact that I was just staying one night. Apparently it's common practice in Malta for hotels to "work together" like this, and palm off bookings they don't fancy fulfilling to another hotel with plenty of vacancies.

The Victoria is pretty much the exact opposite of what I had booked. I wanted a modern apartment - I got a dusty, olde-worlde room. I wanted to be in the heart of the action near the sea-front - I ended up in an anonymous part of central Sliema. I wanted somewhere bright, open and fresh - I got musty, dingy and dimly-lit corridors.

There are, however, some saving graces. The receptionists were all very pleasant and efficient, and the breakfast was pretty good, with a wide choice of good quality food (although it would be nice if they could find another way of cooking the bacon without getting dozens of rashers all stuck together!)

I wouldn't rebook here and indeed I didn't book here in the first place. But it's not a disaster.

This was our first visit to Malta and our stay in the Victoria Hotel made it a very enjoyable experience. The staff at the Victoria Hotel could not have been more friendly and helpful.
I require a gluten-free diet and this was attended to quietly and efficiently - all the meals were very tasty. I can certainly recommend this hotel both for its service and the location.

First I would like to say that all the staff at this hotel could not have been more helpful, cheerful and delightful under difficult circumstances. Dealing with requests with quick, friendly efficiency. They were let down by the hotel itself which did not match the website description at all. Our two Junior Suite rooms 603 and 604 were very tatty, tired, with chipped paint, old furniture and cracked tiles and grouting in the bathroom and not very clean. There was a cigarette left on the floor by the fridge in room 603 - none of us smokes . Lighting was very poor, and the A/C did not work properly. The linen looked old, pillow lumpy and the towels tiny. Our room - 604 was very dusty, due to, I suspect, the construction work that was going on next to and above our rooms from 8.15 am each day.

The drilling, banging and scraping was very loud and disturbed my elderly parents in their room when trying to rest, not to mention waking us up in the morning. We were not informed on booking that this would be going on.

The dining room, where we had to have breakfast was dingy with no character or atmosphere, with no windows, despite being a rather nice room in some ways. Breakfast was a dull buffet with virtually no fresh fruit - just watermelon and some soft apples, sometimes bananas - tinned fruit was on offer instead. Tiny coffee cups which were difficult to hold - and only machine coffees / tea bags and hot water available at a dispenser. No opportunity to eat breakfast outside which was a great shame as the weather was lovely. We did not eat in the restaurant for any other meal. The only bar that was available when the roof bar was closed - often due to strong winds, was a table in the front foyer, with some sofas and chairs, which was more like a waiting room than a pleasant place to enjoy a drink.

The pools on the roof (the larger, infinity pool was shared with the Palace Hotel) were adequate, clean with plenty of sunbeds and tables and chairs. The Terrace Bar had a limited and rather dull menu - but the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. There is a reasonable choice of drinks and it is a pleasant place for a night cap.

All in all the hotel was a disappointment, but was saved from being totally spoiled by the staff. I hope that when the construction and renovation is done, the facilities and rooms offered will be up to their standards and more in keeping with the website description.

Excellent hotel in centre of Sliema about 8 minutes walk to sea. Well trained staff very pleasant, one tiny annoying thing mid June they closed the beautiful bar downstairs, great barman, and we had to use the roof top one, strange because just coming up to peak season. Highly recommend hotel in a very interesting country.

Room Tip: As high as possible, good views.
