“Very good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014

I stayed at the Diplomat for almost 4 weeks after a cancer treatment, and already before my stay I was exceptional happy with the fast responses, the girl Grazielle in the sales department, seems like she were replying/working around the clock.

The hotel is old, and worned, but the friendly faces in the reception makes up for it. Plus the location is very good.

The room was a ok size, and like the rest of the hotel old, but it worked splendid for me. There is mostly older people on the hotel, what was fine for me, because that gave me the gym more or less for myself. The gym was ok, and a fine size for me:)

The breakfast buffet again was good. Nothing stunning, but better than most hotel to that price, and the waiters there, really work fast but still manage to smile and be very friendly. After almost 4 weeks, I enjoyed to get the "hallo sweetie" from the nice smiley black-haired female waiter.

The big minus is the cafe to the diplomat, there could be so great, and were probably the worst service I have had in my 6 years in Malta. One of the waiters was sneak smoking in the fire stairs what I find extremely disgusting, and when he was around he spend more time talking with the ladies, then service the 3-6 people there was in the cafe. The other one, twice found it more important to finish the tv he was watching than servicing us. With the location of this cafe, it could really be a cool place to be, now instead is almost a joke. It annoys be alittle, because all the other people at the hotel, is smiley, fast and efficient, and then is dragged down.

The wifi, there is free only works some places, what was a bit annoying, so maybe routers on each floor?:)

Personally I think the hotel is more like a 3 star than a 4 star, but the price was so good, and very good value for money - as long as one don't use the cafe.

This was our first visit to Malta and so we stayed only one week to have a look around the island and Gozo. We selected the Diplomat because its location gave us easy walking access to the sea front and then to St Julians, Sliema centre, etc. We could not have chosen better. The diplomat is a smallish, cosy, intimate and very friendly hotel. The staff, especially in the kitchen and dining room are so very friendly and pleasant. We found the food homely, delicious and plentiful in good variety , and at dinner the chef always ready to discuss his dishes. Our room overlooked the side street and so lacked a certain amount of light but we had decided not to pay extra for a sea view as we didn't want to spend time in the room gazing at the sea. We had no regrets because 15 metres over the main road, via a very handy pedestrian crossing, we could sit on a promenade bench to see the whole front and breathe the lovely sea air to our hearts' content. So we were happy with our room with a comfortable bed and very adequate bathroom all of which were kept very clean. We found Malta a delightful and interesting place and we will certainly go back - and to the same hotel.

Room Tip: We can't help much with this because we didn't look at any other rooms but the seafront room...

This hotel is ideally situated overlooking the quieter waterfront area where there are beautiful promenades.
It is in the Sliema area with plenty of bus stops close by.
In Malta the busses are excellent and absurdly cheap - buy a 7 day pass or a one day pass.
There is a shopping mall within walking distance.
We booked a sea view room which has great views.
WiFi is very important for us as we are long term travellers (travelling for 1.5 years) so we had a 6th floor room. The WiFi was excellent all the time.
One front of house staff member is absolutely excellent, the other is a bit curt.
The room was adequate with a lovely bed and plenty of pillows.
A coffee table and two easy chairs are provided; there is tea and coffee making facilities with a fridge.
The bathroom set up worked well and the cleaning staff were excellent.
Breakfast was huge - a real English breakfast even with cakes and pastries.
The dinner menu changed every night and usually had a selection of 3 or 4 cooked meats and fish with all sorts of salads and vegetables.
We got on to a meal deal via reception where you purchase three evening meals for E's 30.
This is an excellent deal and I would encourage anyone to take up the offer - less than half price for a normal buffet charge.
The lady who runs the information and tour desk was a real gem, all the barmen and dining staff were great as well.
The roof was a great area to sunbathe; the pool was not open as it was still a bit cool.
We tried the sauna (too hot for me) but not the gym.
We were quite sorry to be leaving after our 10 day stay; there are no negatives at all.

Hotel staff very friendly. Location was great for walking to centre of sliema or down to st juliens bay. Rooms were very clean n cleaning staff very helpful and friendly. Plenty of choice for breakfast did not have evening meals. Let us use room right up to departure and offered extra towells and tea and coffee. Beds really comfy. Would recommend this hotel and will return there again.

This hotel has many good features but also a few aspects which could be improved upon. The location is excellent opposite the sea front and bus stops nearby. The staff, especially in the dining room, are very friendly and the public areas are nicely kept. Food is well cooked with a good choice at breakfast. Our room was quiet and the bed was very comfortable. However, we did feel that our room could do with a refurb (can't speak for others rooms). The covers on the beds were stained and when I politely asked for them to be changed, despite effusive promises nothing was done. The fan in the bathroom didn't work and again despite promises, nothing was done. The fridge was going rusty at the bottom of the door and the table wobbled and we had to wedge it with folded paper. In summary, we did enjoy our stay at this hotel but thought the room and the response of the staff responsible to our comments wasn't as good as it should have been.

We are back from a weeks holiday. The hotel and room were very clean. The room was large with good toilet and shower facilities and a comfortable bed for a good nights sleep. The breakfast was varied with plenty to choose from. The evening meal was on a different theme each night with live music again on a different theme as we had our meal. The staff were very good in all parts of the hotel and nothing was to much trouble. The location of the hotel was ideal, the bus stop was a short walk from the hotel along the promenade on the seafront. A 15 min walk took you into the busy part of Sliema where you can get the ferry to Valetta and the Hop on Hop off buses around the island. Also,a 15min walk takes you to St.Julians Bay. There are plenty of things to see and do in Malta and Gozo and the weather was very good sun and not a drop of rain. The only thing that seemed unusual was at the Pub upstairs bar in the hotel with large screen tv. We were told that if football was on tv ,The free jukebox would be turned off and the football put on the tv. So there was football on for four nights of the week. We even went back to the bar downstairs one night and the football was on there as well. Other than that we had an enjoyable stay at the Diplomat and would go back again.

Just got back from a really good week at this hotel. all staff very nice, friendly and very helpful. Room spotless, bed very comfy had a good nights sleep every night. Breakfast loads to choose from and dinner was good, different options every night. Only disappointment was in the Pub lounge there was football on 4 nights very disappointed as not everyone is interested in Football. Otherwise a very good hotel and would certainly recommend it. Location was very good, all the ferry services and tour buses leave from Sliema so very handy. Definitely would stay here again.
