Diplomat Hotel Malta
Ranked #11 of 28 Hotels in Sliema
Reviewed September 12, 2013

We stayed for 5 nights in september 2013 and had a great time from start to finish.

In advance the hotel had offered us a free meal package upgrade, champagne and chocolates all for free due to it being my partners birthday.

We arrived to have these all waiting in our room, which was spacious, practical and comfortable.

The safe is payable at reception, but not a big deal for 12 euros, and yes the balconys are small, but i didnt intend on spending all holiday in my room anayway.

The pool area is small but still pleasant enough and the pool was great. Stunning views from up there and the bar below is excellent, and the service in all bars was spot on.

Staff were accomodating, chatty and helpful always and we had no issues at all.

Breakfast is great with a wide range to choose from.

All in all i couldnt fault this place and would certainly reccommend to anyone going.

I stayed two nights in Diplomat hotel. The location was good, close to Sliema Torri bus stop. I booked a partial seaview room so I could see a bit of the view. The room was in a good standard but not clean enough. As I thought it is a 4 star rating hotel, I was expecting a good housekeeping service. On the contrary, the cups were dirty. Also we left the towel on the floor to be changed but the housekeeping staff put them back on the rack! We phoned front desk and the manager changed immediately. Nonetheless, this is very unacceptable for me. I guess you get what you paid for.

I just got back from a 5 day holiday to Malta and stayed at the Diplomat. From the first day we had problems! The personal safe that they describe on their website is only personal if you pay €12 for it plus a €10 deposit! We didn't want to spend this so we asked if they could keep our passports behind reception, which every hotel I've ever stayed at has been happy to do so, and this was refused! Now miffed, we decided to ask the Manager if we could put in a formal complaint about this, she became very over defensive and said that apparently all hotels do this and that at least they offered other free services like free wifi!

Other problems were that the hair dryer in the bathroom was just a long pipe thing with a not very powerful drying system and the pipe came out of its socket! Additionally, the balcony was tiny and very unsafe, with the bannister very loose!

On the plus side, as we had no where to store our passport and other valuables, we decided to 'hide' them as best we could in our room and put up the 'Do not disturb' sign for the whole of our stay. This meant that we got to know the cleaning lady who was lovely and didn't ask too many questions about why she couldn't clean our rooms but always left us fresh towels and toilet roll and asked us if needed anything just to let her know!

The bar staff member within the hotel was lovely also and was very helpful when we asked her lots of questions about where were the best places to shop etc!

All in all its not the worst place to stay, but I wouldn't say it were the best in terms of value for money!

The hotel has great location, right in the middle from St. Julians to Valetta. The bus station is 1 minute walk from the hotel. It is right on the beach, rocky, so we didn't go for a swimm there, because malta has so many beutiful sandy beaches. I would recommend getting a front sea view room, becuse the feeling of opening the room doors and only seeing blue sky and sea the big glass window, waking up in te morning to sound of wawes chrashing on beach is great. service in the hotel is ok, not very helpful for our questions, they always told us to aks some lady how has a counter in the lobby selling tour trips for an agency, and we didnt want anything to do with that. tv worked, air conditionig also, i think the cheaper rooms dont have all the amenitis as this one. water on the shower was not working good, only very cold or very hot, but we managed. breakfast has many options, but cooked food is lacking in taste, bit greasy, very standard. all in all, it is a very average hotel, not too bad or good. it has gotten many awards in the 80's, 90's, but for todays oportunities, average. price maybe a bit too high. and everybody was talking about traffic noise but when you close the balcony doors at night there is no problem. slept like a baby every night.

Room Tip: higher floor for better view, front sea view room definitly

The Diplomat Hotel is a good choice if you decide to not spend too much time in your room. It's located very well, the bus station is very close and you can reach busses to Valetta every 10 minutes.
The breakfast is very british, many egg-dishes, sausages and ham but you will also find some fruit and muesli. The Service is very good and the receptionists are helpful. Nice roof-top-bar!

We just came back from 5 days in Malta. At1st I was affraid from the reviews I have read here. We took two rooms for 2 adults and 3 kids. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. We got very good WiFi reception for free. The breakfest was OK the only problem wasa that we had the same menu every morning. The A/C in the room was too good it freezes you in one minute. the bathroom in the 2 person room was very small but clean. The fridge wasn't working. You need to pay 2/5 euro for every day to use the safe in the room + 10 Euro deposit.
The hotel is on the Promenade in a very good location in Sliema not far from the Capital Valletta.
There was also a small swimming-pool on the top of the hotel (8fl) to relax and to have a great view of the beach which is just beneath. the hotel.

we loved our room facing the sea. we were on the 4th floor with a front facing room which was on a corner. our window was floor to ceiling and because we were on the corner we could also see over to st julians.it was fabulous waking up in the morning to the sea. we enjoyed people watching. the joggers, promenaders, swimmers and the many boats go by our window.
our room was very spacious with a table and 2 chairs right by the window where we enjoyed a tea or coffee from the kettle provided by the hotel. we also appreciated the small fridge which enabled us to buy wine and beer to sip while we watched the world go by.
the location is great with the potential to visit lots of places in malta due to the bus stops nearby. I would recommend getting a 7 day bus pass so you don't have to worry about having change for the bus and can get on and off as many as you want.
there are also many cafes and bars looking onto the sea within walking distance of the hotel.
we also enjoyed the rooftop pool and the bar when we wanted to chill out for a few hours. there is a wonderful view looking over the bay.
breakfast was very extensive with something to please everyone.
Obviously not everyone can have a front facing sea view room but if you can, go for it. there is not much difference in the cost and I am so glad I chose this hotel for that reason rather than one which may have had better furnishings but no sea to look at.
