“Disappointed!”
Reviewed July 17, 2014

A 4* Hotel? I think not! We stayed at Fortina for 10 days, having booked a Superior Seaview room. There was certainly nothing Superior about the room, it was very tired, in need of a complete revamp. The furniture was very dated, the fridge stood on a large tray, and there was no Hotel info pack in the room so when we needed to contact Reception, we had no number to use. The air conditioning on our arrival was extremely noisy, but a Maintenance Man was just outside our room at the right time, so it was soon fixed. The lighting in the room was dismal, and in the tiny bathroom it was worse! The bathroom had a very "drainy" smell at times, but must say the shampoo/shower gel/body lotion etc was very nice quality, and it was nice to get a shoe-shine each day! Bathrobes were provided.......my husband had a delightful pink one but he soon got this changed to a much better quality white fluffy one! We had a tiny Juliet balcony (Superior room?) but the redeeming feature was the view of Valletta, which was magnificent and a joy to see at any time of the day. Also, our bedroom always seemed to be the last to be serviced, 3pm and later, rather late we thought. Then one day we had no towels left, I found the "maid" but she said she "didn't do the towels, they will come later"!

The garden area pools were very nice, but a little untidy at times, with glasses/coffee cups just left about. As the pools are shared between the 4*,and 5* hotels! this area should be better serviced.
The pool towels were very thin and worn, one we were given had a largish hole in, so we had to get this changed.

Now for the Restauraunt! We didn't use the Dine Around experience, so used La Vallette Restaurant. Very disappointing! The food was good, nicely cooked, especially the carvery roasts, but the whole restaurant was like a factory canteen. There was obviously not enough staff to cope with the demand, tables left cluttered, Servery areas not kept free of excess food droppings. There seemed to be no-one in charge, no Maître D, etc. it said on entry "Wait to be seated", but all the man did was take your room number! We had to wander round to find a clean table, no tablecloths, and only paper serviettes! No drinks waiter to take our order either. The code of dress at dinner was abysmal - shorts, vests, flip flops for the men, and not much better for the ladies! 4*? I think not! Also, if I had paid 5* price for my stay! I certainly would not want to be eating in this Restaurant.

Watch out for Aldo and his side kick Carmen at breakfast.....they issue the free harbour cruise tickets and persuade you to go on an orientation tour of the 5* Fortina. We guessed this was a Time Share ploy, but went along and had a chance to see 3 bedrooms in the 5*, which were lovely! but we soon made it clear that we had done the Time Share thing, so weren't interested.

We enjoyed our Malta holiday, but think this hotel is running on shoestring staff. It needs a complete revamp and instead of running 2 hotels of different ratings alongside each other and sharing facilities, the owners need to make their minds up what they are doing, and make it one really good high class hotel, which it could be as it has prime position in Sliema.

Perhaps we have been spoilt by other 4* and 5* hotels elsewhere. The Fortina certainly did not come up to our expectations, so although we enjoyed Malta, we were disappointed with the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floor, and if not satisfied with room, ask for a change as some rooms were very tiny...

We've just returned from a week long stay at Hotel Fortina on half- board basis. The restaurants (yes, 6 to choose from in total) and pool areas were great- well kept and nicely presented. The food was ample and good quality. We particularly liked the idea that you could reserve tables in the Thai, Italian, Mediterranean, Japanese and Indian restaurants which helped add some variety to our half board stay.
We were given a free harbour cruise as part of our package which took an hour and a half and was really enjoyable.
Pool had amazing views over the bay to Valletta. Passing yachts and boats provided hours if entertainment whilst sunbathing on the loungers.
The only gripe I have is with the room itself- tired and in desperate need of a revamp! Cleaners seemed to favour a horrid smelling solution which they used each day in our bathroom so the small bathroom needed airing when we returned to the room every evening.
Overall, a good hotel but I may be tempted to try the 5star next door if we were to return in the future to see if their rooms are any better.

Room Tip: Request a sea view room for amazing views of bay and Valletta.

I stayed at the Fortina from 1st July for a week. On the whole it was good, but the room was snug to say the least. We had a twin standard seaview which was really only big enough for a single. The bathroom was tiny. Just enough room to stand and dry off. As the extractor fan was innefecient, it was like a sauna. The food was good, but very British. Always a good choice and hot. I would stay again, but would book a superior room. One more point was that a ramp beteeen the lift and our room was dangerous. It was laminated floor and very slippery. You had to hold onto the handrail. For a not so agile person this would't be safe.

Room Tip: Go for superior on high floor

We had a week in this hotel and were very impressed. I had several free spa sessions which started the day off nicely. The staff were very pleasant and the pools were lovely. There was a central island bar in the garden pool also another pool with fantastic views of Valletta. The food was extremely good in the evening buffet restaurant. Reasonable variety for buffet breakfast and the option on half board to dine around. A week ticket for all day travel on the bus is 6.50 euros. Frequent service. amazing value. Good boat trips on offer everywhere but do haggle as they will always do a deal.

Room Tip: We had a sea view room on the 8th floor which was very spacious and quiet, but also looked out over...

We only had a weekend break at the Fortina hotel malta, but have to say, yes! this place was excellent. They have one of the best pools (with such great views) that we have come across in any hotel we have visited, breakfast food was a buffet style but very good with plenty of choice, the bedrooms were nice and large, very clean and the staff very smiley people. we just cant fault the fortina hotel at all as its REAL value for money. The only slight problem that we encountered was the amount of (old) people that were complaining about such trivial things, at times it makes you wonder if some people just go on vacation for a good old moan. Anyway the fortina will be getting a return visit from us next time we visit malta. And a tip for anyone with plans to visit this lovely little island is, give this hotel a try its excellent value for money.. thanks smiley people for a nice couple of days

Booked last minute an got a great room overlooking the gardens and pool. Nice and clean. Stayed on a room only basis but plenty of bars/cafes/restaurants within walking distance. Excellent view of Valetta from the Lido pool. Buses and ferry to Valetta very handy and cheap. Ask for a day ticket. Check if your stay encounters a saints festival as the fireworks start in about 10am in the morning and again at 6ishpm. Very loud be prepared but in the evening had a fantastic firework dispay. Would definately book again.
Note that if you book the standard room it is very small and bathroom is tiny. Air con a little noisy and the room needs updating but this is in the process. Guy at breakfast offering harbour cruise is a ploy for timeshare.

Room Tip: Standard rooms on the sea front are small and bathroom tiny.

Truly amazing view from the front facing rooms spoilt only by the road and the associated noise felt the need to leave door open because air con was rather old and noisy our particular room was a little dowdy the rooms need updating but for a week we thought we could handle it.
Staff are very good ,but was very disappointed with Aldo at the breakfast entrance trying to entice you into viewing the 5 star hotel which was an obvious con to get you into timeshare ,we didn't go to meeting ! .breakfasts menu not great no where near what you would expect for 4 star, needs more fresh fruit and proper juices , evening buffet meals much better .garden pool and island bar very nice, lido across the road for serious sun worship peers all part of the hotel.couldn't see what the 5 star hotel was getting over the 4 star other than probably better rooms and a more extensive menu in the dine around restaurants which are good Thai being the best by far ,didn't like the fact that as 4 star guests you had a much less extensive menu and fixed than the 5 star if you dined around. All in all very happy with the position of hotel with that stunning view from the front, would stay again but I will do my homework on the room size and fittings
