A 4* Hotel? I think not! We stayed at Fortina for 10 days, having booked a Superior Seaview room. There was certainly nothing Superior about the room, it was very tired, in need of a complete revamp. The furniture was very dated, the fridge stood on a large tray, and there was no Hotel info pack in the room so when we needed to contact Reception, we had no number to use. The air conditioning on our arrival was extremely noisy, but a Maintenance Man was just outside our room at the right time, so it was soon fixed. The lighting in the room was dismal, and in the tiny bathroom it was worse! The bathroom had a very "drainy" smell at times, but must say the shampoo/shower gel/body lotion etc was very nice quality, and it was nice to get a shoe-shine each day! Bathrobes were provided.......my husband had a delightful pink one but he soon got this changed to a much better quality white fluffy one! We had a tiny Juliet balcony (Superior room?) but the redeeming feature was the view of Valletta, which was magnificent and a joy to see at any time of the day. Also, our bedroom always seemed to be the last to be serviced, 3pm and later, rather late we thought. Then one day we had no towels left, I found the "maid" but she said she "didn't do the towels, they will come later"!
The garden area pools were very nice, but a little untidy at times, with glasses/coffee cups just left about. As the pools are shared between the 4*,and 5* hotels! this area should be better serviced.
The pool towels were very thin and worn, one we were given had a largish hole in, so we had to get this changed.
Now for the Restauraunt! We didn't use the Dine Around experience, so used La Vallette Restaurant. Very disappointing! The food was good, nicely cooked, especially the carvery roasts, but the whole restaurant was like a factory canteen. There was obviously not enough staff to cope with the demand, tables left cluttered, Servery areas not kept free of excess food droppings. There seemed to be no-one in charge, no Maître D, etc. it said on entry "Wait to be seated", but all the man did was take your room number! We had to wander round to find a clean table, no tablecloths, and only paper serviettes! No drinks waiter to take our order either. The code of dress at dinner was abysmal - shorts, vests, flip flops for the men, and not much better for the ladies! 4*? I think not! Also, if I had paid 5* price for my stay! I certainly would not want to be eating in this Restaurant.
Watch out for Aldo and his side kick Carmen at breakfast.....they issue the free harbour cruise tickets and persuade you to go on an orientation tour of the 5* Fortina. We guessed this was a Time Share ploy, but went along and had a chance to see 3 bedrooms in the 5*, which were lovely! but we soon made it clear that we had done the Time Share thing, so weren't interested.
We enjoyed our Malta holiday, but think this hotel is running on shoestring staff. It needs a complete revamp and instead of running 2 hotels of different ratings alongside each other and sharing facilities, the owners need to make their minds up what they are doing, and make it one really good high class hotel, which it could be as it has prime position in Sliema.
Perhaps we have been spoilt by other 4* and 5* hotels elsewhere. The Fortina certainly did not come up to our expectations, so although we enjoyed Malta, we were disappointed with the hotel.
