“Fantastic hotel in a brilliant location!”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

This hotel is in an excellent location with great travel links to all the excursions, beaches, bars and right next door to the shopping centre.

Friendly atmosphere with polite and helpful staff. Concierge were very useful for advising ways to get around (buses etc).

We were kindly upgraded to a suite (room 422), and had a fabulous view from the balconies (we had two!) overlooking the garden. Our room was large, clean, with aircon, complimentary safe and toiletries.

There are a couple of outdoor pools, one overlooking the seafront and Valetta, the other in a garden view with a swim-up bar. The spa was fantastic and I would recommend treating yourself there!

Lots of choice for breakfast and it's all self-service, which is perfect if you like to just get up and go to explore!

There is also a cocktail bar over looking the waterfront and Valetta, which I would highly recommend at dusk, it's beautiful! It was €3 for a glass of wine and about the same for a bottle of beer.

They offer every guest a complimentary spa treatment, in their salt water bath, however, we didn't advantage of this, because we had lots of adventures pre-planned! They also provide a complimentary ticket for the harbour cruise, which is worth it if your into your history. They also provide guests with 25% off in some of their restaurants and 20% off spa treatments, which I'm sure you'll agree are all really nice touches.

This is a huge hotel, with so much available, from the spa, gym, 3 swimming pools, a shop, a quiet garden area for lounging around, and lots of restaurants.

The reservationist was very polite, friendly and helpful in arranging our transfers to the hotel (€43 return, payable to the driver).

I would definitely recommend it, and we will look forward to returning again in the near future.

Thank you for a fabulous holiday Hotel Fortina :)

Room Tip: A balcony room with a garden view is very beautiful, so you wouldn't be disappointed if this is...

did a catch up on reviews before we booked this hotel again and was annoyed about some of the comments people had made regards references to time share and harbour cruises etc and all I need to say is that this is an absolutely fab hotel, the cruise is compliamentry, if its not for you dont take up the offer, if you do its well worth the trip. There is definately no hard selling at all and as a family with teenagers we could not fault the hotel, the staff in all areas or any of the facilities on offer. The location is great, and so is malta. Well done Fortina regards and thanks

On arriving at the hotel Fortina i found the reception staff friendly and helpfull and even upgraded me to a lagre room on the 6th floor,so a good start to the holiday.Room was spotless and included A/C and safe at no extra charge.
Lifts were working fine, food good choice each day and waiting staff friendly and efficient.
A good central location to unwind by the pools or garden and transport for sight seeing around the island.Buggiba good if you want some enterainment or better choice of bars for the evening and there is also a motor museum.
Just one drawback the poolside bars serving food is not so good.
On the whole i would recommend this hotel for everyone.

Room Tip: quieter rooms i would say face inland as outer face main road.

After reading some previous reviews was a little unsure what to expect but was pleasantly suprised overall.
We had a room on the 5th floor overlooking the harbour to Valetta and so did not experience any traffic noise. The room was large and comfortable but the balcony was a little small - just enough room for 2 chairs and a small table but thats all we really needed. Balconies and rooms do vary in size as we spoke to some people with a huge balcony but a tiny room, so my advice would be to swap rooms if you are not happy with your initial allocation. Cleaning was great as they chnaged towels and sheets every day.
We ate in the buffet restaurant most nights which served really good food - different hot and cold choices every night including various vegetarian options. The restaurant overlooks the pool and over to Valetta and was furnished to a good modern standard. The same restaurant does great breakfasts again with plenty of choice. My only gripe would be sometimes the Corn Flakes were the budget variety and tatsed like cardboard, whilst the next day they would be the proper thing! The cold milk machine did break down one morning but the staff had it fixed within about 10 minutes.
We did eat at some of the other restaurants in the complex but some have set menus and so choices were more limited.
There is a chap offering free harbour cruises outside the buffet restaurant trying to sign you up to look round the 5* complex next door. We took the free harbour cruise but declined the offer of the tour round the 5* complex. The free harbour cruise was very enjoyable but everyone in Sliema seems to be giving them away free!
Some reception staff were very helpful whilst on other days different staff werent quite as forthcoming so perhaps a little more consistency would be good.
Would return to this Hotel if I ever go back to Sliema as the location was great and offered great accommodation.

Great hotel and close to good shopping and eating places. Sea view rooms have great views and are well worth the extra payment. Also very decent breakfast for Brits and a great place to sunbathe on the bay side that is reached from inside the hotel.
Only downside is having to pay for wifi but the hotel next door has if free and all the restaurants down the road do too.

Room Tip: Get a seaview room with the extra few Euros

I have to strongly disagree with previous reviewers who say the reception staff were aloof. We found them to be very sweet girls and very friendly. I think a lot of it is in the attitude of the guests. I was rather embarrassed one day to be standing next to a female guest at reception who was speaking to the receptionist in rather a derogatory tone, I also witnessed this in some of the restaurants and it made me cringe at how rude some of the guests were. And some of the things some people were finding to complain about, I wouldn`t show myself up!

We had a lovely room, just what I was hoping for, with a lovely view of Valletta. On learning we were getting married in Malta the receptionist upgraded our room for us and gave us the choice of garden or sea view. As lovely as the gardens are, we thought we can look at nice gardens anywhere, so went for the sea view.

The location of the hotel is perfect for getting about with buses and ferries nearby. The all- day bus ticket is very cheap but we mainly preferred to get the ferry across to Valletta for 2.50 euros each return, runs every half hour and only takes a few minutes to get across.

The food in the restaurants was nice. We were on the Dine Around Option and contrary to what a previous reviewer said we were offered a table outside almost every night. I think the secret is to book an early table as the last couple of nights we opted for late dining (about 9 pm) and obviously all the outdoor tables had been taken. It was hard getting booked into the Indian restaurant as it quickly got booked up but as you can`t book more than 2 days in advance I would recommend making it your first job to book when you get up in the morning. I think our favourite was maybe La Vallette due to the choice of food, although it didn`t have the ambience of the other restaurants. The staff in the restaurants were generally very friendly and I take my hat off to their levels of tolerance. I saw one couple causing a bit of a scene with the staff of Momo`s and storm out because they couldn`t have the desert they wanted. If I was going to be petty I would say it was mildly irritating hearing a list of deserts being mentioned to other diners and because we were on the Dine Around option we generally just had the choice of ice cream or fresh fruit.

If I had to say anything negative it would really just be the timeshare reps. For the first few days they rang our room at around 8 am, I don`t suppose they would have known we were honeymooners, but I thought it was annoying to keep ringing when we said we weren`t interested.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Oh and if you need to get your hair done the girls at Heaven Hair Salon are lovely and did a brilliant job on my wedding day hair-do!
