Owner description: St. Paul’s Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today’s Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A. Caruana, the pioneer of Christian archaeology in Malta.

“If you must visit catacombs - this is the place”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

Its a strange visit, most tourists go to St.Paul's Catacombs. St.Agatha's complex is splendidly 'higardy piggledy' an eclectic mix of all kinds of Malta history. Its all mixed together, bones, skulls, paintings, church relics, early and recent coins and war time notes - its all around you. On the hour they call you to visit the catacombs. The whole area is riddled with these ancient burial places. Our tour guide - ' Joe '(I think) was enthusiastic and could not wait to impart his considerable knowledge. Wonderful passageways with chambers of all sizes scouped out of the limestone. Be warned, if your not good on your feet, able to duck (or your very short) claustrophobic, this may not be for you. But I enjoyed it and I am 6' 3" " !

“small but interesting”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

These catacombs are small (the section you can visit is so, to be true, in all actuality they are very big) but they have the murals that have been lost in St. Paul's. The painting are very beautiful and interesting. The museum is small, not particularly interesting in my opinion, but since you usually have to wait for the guided visit it's worth a visit

“Very Historic”
Reviewed December 20, 2013

Great guide who was very knowledgable and gave a good account of the very historic church and museum.
The catacombs are well worth a visit to see how the Maltese had to shelter during the war. Don't go down if you are claustrophobic!
A great morning out for all ages.
