Owner description: St. Paul’s Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today’s Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A. Caruana, the pioneer of Christian archaeology in Malta.

It's smaller then St' Pauls Catacombs across the street. You have to pay 5 euros for 15 min tour. But also for visit the museum which is really interesting. You can see skeletons, crocodile mummies, pottery exhibited some of these date back to about the 6 th BC,the votive slabs collection etc.
The catacombs have skeletons still inside. The tour guide (probably Indian) not really into his work.15 min tour, short explanation what you are seeing, thank you and bye.But catacombs speak for themselves.

This is very different from the catacombs across the road. Different, but still very enjoyable. I decided to skip the museum visit. Only my husband went upstairs to see the museum. It was very hot and he only lasted a few minutes. It has a bit of a natural history angle.

The tour of the catacombs is a guided one and whilst it only takes 15 minutes or so it is very enjoyable. The young man who delivers the tour is wonderful and engaging and really makes it very interesting. I am embarrassed to say that I cannot remember if he is from Sri Lanka or Pakistan, but he also mentioned that he may have to leave soon to go back. I truly hope that something can be done to help him stay in Malta and keep his job at St Agatha's. He clearly has a passion for what he does and it would be a big loss if he was to leave. All the best to him.
As for the Catacombs, they really are fascinating and well worth a visit. Unfortunately they do not allow photography of any kind inside, which was a little disappointing, but if it is for the preservation of the site, then it is understandable.

Absolutely fascinating insight into previous times. Watch out though when you go through one of the tombs - up above the roof is covered in slugs! We only saw them by accident. They can't harm you or anything but I didn't want one to land on my head. Excellent value for money.
