Owner description: OPEN MONDAY - SUNDAY from 09.00 Till 17.00Hrs (last admission at 16.30Hrs). St.Paul's Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today's Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul's Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr A.A. Caruana, the pioneer of Christian era archaeology in Malta.

Like other reviewers I have visited many other Catacombs. I found these disappointing - and not that well laid out in regard to information etc.

I visited quite a few catacombs in my life, of course the ones in Rome are incredible and huge, however the particularity of this is that you can go around by yourself, in this way you understand better the feelings of our ancestors. It is certainly a little gloomy , but at the same time it provides a very different experience.

As far as catacombs go, this probably isn't the most scary or the darkest or the richest in terms of bones and history but still an interesting experience down underground.

One of the best attributes of the catacombs is that you can take your time and wander (carefully) throughout the site. The audio guide is informative, but you can switch it off and take in the atmopshere. It isn't scary or creepy, but it is dark and there are many steps, so you do need to take care.
