The Church in Mosta has a fascinating history. It is the most beautiful building outside and inside, but the story of what happened during the war is amazing.
During an air raid 300 people were in the church, no doubt praying for their safety, then a 500kg bomb fell through the domed roof and smashed into the mosaic floor just in front of the altar!
It failed to explode and the people inside survived! The British forces on Malta defused the bomb and took it away to be destroyed.
There is a replica of the bomb on display inside the church.
A Miracle I am sure you will agree!

I am not at all religious, and you don't need to be to appreciate this incredible church. It had the third largest unsupported dome in the world, that however is just a statistic, the building and interior just took my breath away. It is another must see in Malta. During the war a bomb came through the dome during a service, bounced off the floor and wall and rolled down the aisle but failed to explode. None of the 300 worshipers were injured. You can see where the bomb came through the dome and a replica is displayed in one of the rooms within the rotunda. Don't miss it.

We were surprised by the location of the church, right next to a large roundabout which is very busy. It is a massive church which can be seen from far away and the size of the dome makes it stand out.
There are very few parking spaces in the church's car park, however roads leading up to the church have parking spaces on the side of the road.
Remember to cover up shoulders.

Positives

+Free entrance
+Very large and spectacular inside and out

Okay's

We were lucky visiting the church during the week the Maltese celebrated The Assumption of Mary. It was dressed inside and outside for the occasion, and in combination with the very beautiful dome, it was a wonderful experience. And the exciting story of the church just made the experience better.

Incredible, astounding, beautiful.
Worth a visit. Very easy to get to.
Friendly volunteer staff.
This is a place of worship, so there is a dress code, which many tourists sadly ignore... Shawls etc are provided if you didn't wear clothing which covers your shoulders etc.
