We spent a night in the Xara, having visited Mdina on several occasions and always promising to treat ourselves, we finely booked in. Room 14 is very tastefully decorated and has a really comfortable bed (better than home!) Our terrace upstairs came complete with a personal jacuzzi (extra towels provided) and the views over Malta are beautiful. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We ate in their Mondion Gormet restaurant which did not disappoint either. Mdina is an enchanting walled city and delightful after the bulk of tourists have left. Only downer was some noise from local discos/and wine bars.

It is a hotel in a nice location with some of the staff willing to do well, the other half of the team can spoil your week end

Room Tip: If you go for a suite ..feeling isolated might be a challenge

We stayed at this hotel last month and we had a great time. We really loved its decoration since it was very unique and authentic. Rooms were spacious, service was great and food was excellent. If you visit Malta you should definitely stay there.

This review is a little late as we traveled to Mdina in September. The staff was very accomodating we were supposed to arrive in Malta the following week and had reservations for four days. Due to a hurricaine we left the US two days early and while wating to board our plane to Malta realized we did not have a reservation for lodging. I called and explained the situation, they were able to book two rooms on a days notice.
When we arrived we were greeted warmly and shown to a lovely room. The property is located inside the walled city which was absolutely beautiful. The room was a bit dated and could use some updates, but in general a very nice property.
The food and service was excellent

If you are into living history in Malta, then Xara Palace is the place to stay. The 17th Century building has been brought back to life by the present owner's family. The staff go out of their way to make you feel at home. Its not the sort of place to stay if you want sea views as Mdina is in the centre of the island. By day Mdina is full of tourists, but at night the old fort is practically devoid of people and the atmosphere is enchanting.

The Xara Palace is located in Mdina. Malta is very small so you can reach the sea within 15 minutes. I do not like very big hotels so thats why I choosed to stay there. The hotel has been built in an old palace. Mdina is a good place to spend holiday is you want to be outside the touristic places. During daytime there are a lot of tourist but in the evening it is very quiet. The hotel is rated with 5 *. But I will give them 4* for the rooms and 3* for the service. The rooms - since in a old building are loud if you are in the first floor. I urgently recommend to book a room with view (not duplex room - you'll have view on a wall!!) Room nr 7 was very nice on 2 floors and with a whirlpool on the roof with a spectacular view. But on the upper floor there is the restaurant and while you try to sleep upstairs they are preparing the breakfast room for the next day and you can hear everything.. I recommend to stay not longer than 2 or 3 days at this hotel. The breakfast is ok but the service very very slow.. be patient.. for a relais & chateau I expected more. there isn't a pool where you can relax or a spa. I recommend this hotel for people who want to discover Malta - its a good starting point. You need a permission to enter inside mdina with your rental car - hotel is providing it. ask them when you make the booking. I enjoyed my stay at Xara Palace but it is not a 5* hotel. For sleeping here and discover the island absolutely ok. The restaurant A.D. makes good pizza. And also in Mdina there are a few good restaurants to visit (shamra).

My partner and I went to Xara Palace to experience their New Year's package. (Disclaimer: We travel together, but write our own reviews.) And it serves to mention that I am reviewing this hotel according to what I expect from an R&C hotel, and not just from any random hotel in Malta.

The location of the Xara Palace is absolutely superb. Located right near the entrance inside Mdina, it is the best thing that this hotel has going for it. I felt secluded inside the walls, yet also in the middle of history. The travel books say to visit Mdina at night once the crowds leave, and they are right -- the place is magical at night. Truly. And the breakfast overlooking Malta was amazing!

The rooms are well-appointed and cozy. Looking around when the doors were open, each room has a different layout, so it's rather impossible to sum up all the rooms in the Xara Palace. The "loft" set-up of our room was odd, and the TV was downstairs and there wasn't much upstairs by the bed. However, I understand the Xara Palace is located inside a medieval city, so I am lucky that we even have the opportunity to stay in such a fun setting, no matter the room layout!

Service was at times officious and at times lacking -- I wish Xara found that balance between the two. The check-in process was very non-R&C, in that they sat us down and asked for a credit card immediately (even though the entire sizable sum had been prepaid). Other R&Cs do not do that, and the check-in process could be a lot more seamless here. And why did the postcards I gave to the concierge at the beginning of our stay not  receive a postmark until over 2 weeks after we gave them to him? Unacceptable.  The service at breakfast was the best we encountered, and that's a red flag to management, because breakfast is usually the B-team.

My partner and I usually book an entire package at a hotel for New Years, since that is our anniversary. And we stay with Relais & Chateaux properties because they normally provide a special treat for New Year's. And at this, and at providing a "magical experience," Xara Palace fails miserably. As opposed to previous New Years stays where there were dedicated events (and similar prices, to boot), the Xara Palace only had a mediocre meal at their restaurant de Mondion (a separate review on TripAdvisor, which includes fish that had to be sent back) and then NO EVENTS.  They had promised an accordion player and fireworks and other events to make the night, and there was nothing. And not a peep by management when we brought up the lack of these events. We had to make our way down to Valletta for New Year's due to the lack of anything at Xara.  Our night was special, but NOT because of the Xara Palace. Management seemed like they didn't care. And really, we could have booked the hotel and dinner separately without the package and paid less -- that's the most egregious error. They are in the business of hospitality AND making money, and they sacrificed hospitality FOR making money.

Ultimately, the Xara Palace is a fine hotel in a great location, and I would not hesitate to recommend it. However, it does a disservice to the Relais & Chateaux brand if it attempts to set its service apart from other hotels. Suffice to say that Xara Palace is lucky that "consistency" isn't one of the "Five C's" of Relais & Chateaux!!!
