Tea Garden /Restaurant on the city walls in Mdina. Ground level and rooftop seating areas. Excellent views from rooftop area. Service prompt with polite smiling waiting staff. Not always the case in Malta! The cakes are lovely. On one visit I had a ricotta pie which was also good. Portion sizes are generous. Well worth a visit.

We had wandered around the quiet streets of Mdina for a while, and needed some refreshments. We had been told that the Fontanella Tea Gardens is somewhat legendary in the area, so we had to try it for ourselves.

And we're so glad we did. Not only do they serve all the tea under the sun (which is great for us, as we both like rather strange teas!) but their cakes are absolutely out of this world. Definitely up there with the best cakes I've ever had.

And the views from the terrace are terrific. You can basically see all of Malta from up there, actually tracing the contour of the island.

A beautiful establishment in a beautiful place. Definitely worth a visit.

When we saw this restaurant in Mdina, we thought it looked expensive from the outside. How wrong we were. We visited the restaurant on three occasions. Service was impeccable as was the food and the views of Mdina added to the pleasant atmosphere in the very busy restaurant. We had cakes from the large selection on offer and they were light and delicious costing about 2 euros 50 each. The baguettes were lovely. I also had a massive pizza which was tasty at about 8 euros, there was enough for two to share. There was a large choice of beverages including fruit teas which pleased me as they were served in a pot. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting Malta, we will certainly be going back when we return to Malta. There were also toilets conveniently located on the ground floor.

There are mixed reviews of the Fontanella Tea Garden but based on our experience, it has to be 5 out of 5.

Mdina itself is a must visit place and has an almost surreal quality. The weather was very sunny and a bit windy which meant that it could be chilly walking along the narrow alleyways out of the sun. The Fontanella was very busy but we got a table straight away on the upper floor with unmatchable views of half the island from our seats. The menu is extensive and offers hot meals as well as cold snacks but tea and cake is where they excel. The choice was almost impossible to make - all of our favourite cakes were on the menu and checking out at what was being served to other customers, the portion sizes looked enormous. In the end, we shared a classic chocolate fudge cake laced with caramel and a slice of carrot cake. Absolutely delicious and at only 2.9 euros each was amazing value. Yes - service was a bit slow but then they were very busy. All it meant was that we had even more time to savour the views and the excellent cakes.

Note: There is a fun train that does a tour of Mdina (pick it up at the end of the bus station). There's a comprehensive commentary in English (other languages available) and it was one of the best of its type that we've experienced. Well worth giving it a go
