A delightful place! Views, good food, excellent coffee, efficient service. A must stop in Mdina. Be sure to try the chocolate cake.

Yes Fontanella is in all the guidebooks but it has got a lovely view across Malta and despite what I had read the service was very good when we went.
The highlight for us was the pastizzi - these were the best ones out of the 5 different places we ate them whilst in Malta - the pastry was delectable - beautifully laminated and crispy without disintegrating into a cloud of flakes. The pea (piselli) filling reminded us a little of a delicately spiced samosa. Good coffee.

While esploring the magnificent old city of Mdina, we needed somewhere to rest our feet and refresh ourseves. Up on the old walls of the fortified city we found just the place - Fontanella Tea Garden and cafe. The view from the upper terrace is superb, down from the promontory on which the city is built to the fields, other towns and the coast beyond. The coffee is great, and be ready to taste the "Pastizzi" (puff pastry nibbles) and the wide choice of home-made cakes. Prices are reasonable - for a tourist area. The only niggle was that there seemed to be some confusion about table numbers and their orders - but that did not spoil the occasion. PS: it was so good, we went back 2 days later...
