Being one of the top restaurants in Malta, De Mondion has not failed us so far. Food is great, in presentation and taste, the view from the terrace is just beautiful and offers a nice romantic setting. One slightly negative experience during our last dinner there was on the wines. Wines a generally quite on the high side in this restaurant and the wine I chose was unfortunately out of stock. Ordering an alternative, the sommelier came back again apologizing that even that one was out of stock. He then went on to recommend an alternative which would have cost more than twice as much as the one that I had chosen. One would expect in a top restaurant like this, that out of stock wines are somewhat marked in this massive big wine list and that staff is discrete and tactful enough to propose an equal not just in quality but also in price. Room for improvement !

Ate here whilst staying in the Xara Palace, excellent food served on a terrace overlooking Mosta and in the far distance Valletta.

As always we received a warm welcome with an excellent table offering panoramic vistas of the south of Malta. An excellent menu, finely crafted augmented by a first class wine menu.

This is a 'fine dining' destination restaurant; it regularly scores highly in a leading Maltese restaurant guide which depends for its ratings on reviews by ordinary diners (rather than inspectors). I had dinner here recently with two friends. The menu is interesting. The number of choices was, however, limited to five per course: given the apparent complexity - maybe over-complexity (according to the menu descriptions) - of some of the dishes, the limited choice was perhaps not surprising. There was something of a mix-up when we arrived - we were shown to a table and given a menu; the menu was then taken away and we were moved from our table out onto the terrace for drinks, and given different menus. Service was slow to start with - about an hour between arriving and being served our starters. In sharp contrast, the main course arrived immediately we had finished our starters. Service of the wine and water was somewhat haphazard. The starters were excellent: (including a dish of snails and crab meat, a combination which worked well together) while our main courses, while very good, were less interesting (lamb, rabbit, pork). Dessert: my chocolate and raspberry coulant was just right - firm on the outside and soft and runny in the middle - but my friend was astonished to be told that the restaurant had run out of vanilla ice cream. We thought the restaurant was overpriced for what it delivered, but despite these criticisms, we had a very enjoyable evening.

We loved the location and the food and service were great. Hint: use the elevator to access the downstairs toilets as the dining room washrooms are a little strange to get to, as you have to get really close to other tables (like awkwardly close) and go outside. Unless of course you are seated outside, which would be amazing on a warm night.
