“Always our first stop whenever we visit!!”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

As we have a house on the Island we are regular visitors to Gozo from the UK & our first stop on arrival is always to visit Sandra & Noel for the warmest of welcomes & fantastic seafood.

This is a family run restaurant, it is rustic and charming with a chalk board detailing the availablity of each days fresh catch which Noel cooks to perfection & Sandra & their Daughter are the perfect hosts. The food is cooked freshly for you & because of this Sandra takes the order for your starter & main course at the same time to ensure that there is not too long to wait between your courses as the restaurant gets very busy. Having said that ,the atmoshere is relaxed & never rushed, we have been know to spend a delightful 2-3 hours sipping our wine, admiring the view & enjoying a leisurely lunch. This may not be the cheapest place on the island but there is a price to be paid for the freshest of seafood cooked with expertise in such a wondeful setting.

What Noel & Sandra offer is quite unique , it would be a shame for new visitors to miss the opportunity of experiencing their hospitality.

As for us , well we look forwrad to our next trip & many more visits to this hidden gem !!

“Worst dining experience in my life!”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Yesterday we decided to go for lunch to mgarr-ix-xini. The service we got was so bad that not only haven't I ever experienced anything of the kind in my 8 years in malta, but if someone were to tell me I would think they were probably joking. So, ladies and gentlemen, brace yourself and prepare to read about the horrors:
Sandra, wife of the owner came to take our order. We wanted to order 5 starters and order our fish after we had finished the starters. She said that some fish might not be available and it takes 45 min to cook it (on a candle I presume)...anyway it was fine by us since it was Sunday and we weren't in a rush. The toast with ricci that we were served as an appetizer hardly had any ricci on it. So we kindly asked the staff if they had more ricci, after 20 min we were brought another portion of toast with the same amount of ricci on it. When we tried to explain to the waitress that we would like more ricci and not more bread she started going on about how much ricci cost and that "that's the way they serve this dish". We didn't touch it and sent it back.
For starters we had prawns and calamari which we good, and the mussels that weren't cleaned.
So here comes the big one: when we asked what fish they had to order for our main course, we were told that there is NONE left ( 2pm in a fish restaurant lol). We were a bit puzzled to say the least cause all of us were still a bit hungry but we decided not to ruin our afternoon and just continued with our wine. A few min later the chef came to take the order at the table next to us...and guess what: he started offering them a selection of fish lol. This was a bit too much so we confronted the chef. He said he wanted us to order everything together. I guess it's a new practice where u order your starter, main, desert, wine AND the bill as soon as u step foot in the restaurant. 2 tourist couples next to us stood up and approached our table to join in the confrontation because they were given a table in the sun, when there was a table in the shade available. After 30 min nobody took their order and the supposedly booked table in the shade was still vacant. The reaction of the chef/owner to our complaints was just out of this world: not only didn't he excuse himself he got very defensive and just ran of with a "bye-bye-bye-bye" lol. His wie Sandra came to the table and asked if we still wanted to order fish...needless to say we had had enough of that fishy place and we asked for the bill. They refused to give us 6 eu change because we sent back the second portion of toast with ricci that we hadn't actually ordered or eaten. Eventually they gave the 6 eu back. Obviously it wasn't about the 6 eu for us but the appalling greed and unprofessionalism of the owners of mgarr-ix-xini. That place charges top notch prices, which we expect to pay at top-notch restaurants, where service is with a smile, the decor doesn't include rusty iron 1992 tables and chairs, and there are no food shortages AND we can order what we want when we want to.
So I guess this is hands down my worst dining experience EVER, considering I go out to eat 4-5 times a week.

“Every September for the last three years. I love this place”
Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

We visit friends on Gozo in September and always come genre at least once for the warm welcome and excellent rush. If you're not a fish lover, go somewhere else and leave more for me!!! Seafood and fish so fresh it's delicious. I recommend the mussels and the clams but choose whatever Noel and Sandra have to offer. Thank you again for a chilled and delightful lunch. Gizo and the tree dwellers are a delight. Maybe see you next September.

“Mini heaven, but beware!”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

I first went to Mgarr ix xini some years ago. It was just a small sandy beach at the end of a jaw dropping single lane road, with tight bends, and it ended up nearly vertically downwards! Returned last year and found the drive was the same, not for the faint hearted or larger cars. The inlet and the beach are heavenly, but now there was a tree shaded open air restaurant at the back of the beach. The seafood was fresh and covered anything a sea food buff could wish for. Went back twice this year, on a Saturday and a Monday. (They do lunches from about 10 to 5pm only) The difficult drive is the same, and the surroundings at beach level are beautiful as ever. HOWEVER, the beach has been targeted by the Scuba diving schools, and other divers, quite apart from a steady flow of restaurant customers.. There was only ever very limited parking, but now parking after 10 is near impossible. Most people park up to 1 Km back up the hill and walk down. On both days I arrived early and managed to double park outside the restaurant, jumping up to do dodgems with other cars when necessary.. The parking space is VERY limited ... be warned. The food is wonderful, everything cooked fresh in front of your eyes. The menu varies depending on what the chef has been able to buy from the morning catch. As a result, they may only have one lobster, and when it is gone, it is gone. Sadly, like most things, the restaurant has cashed in on its success. The wine prices are reasonable by Gozo restaurant standards, but from memory, the overall price for meals has just about doubled over the last year. A plate of about 24 giant king prawns, chips, and a botttle of wine was about 45 Euros. A larger lunch for two including Langoustines and a bottle of wine was about 90 Euros inc a tip. Unlike an earlier reviewer, I thought the chef and lady owner could not have been brighter or more helpful. One of the waitresses could learn to smile a bit more, but they all work hard and non stop. This is a lovely spot and probably best approached by boat, but I suspect that out of main season the parking problem may not be so severe.

“Good food, poor service, expensive”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

The food was good. The waitress/owner was abrupt and sadly her attitude let the place down. Compared to the rest of the island, the food is very overpriced. Great place for swimming afterwards.
