I have just returned from two magnificent weeks at Al Vecchio Convento, and I feel as though I have left family behind. A week of Italian language study at Academy Olmo, a week of cooking class with the incomparable Giovanni, Massimo and Matteo, much hiking and walking in between - all this overseen by the warm and caring Marisa. Traveling alone, as my wife was busy writing, it was especially pleasant to be wrapped up in the warmth of this special family and the welcoming little village of Portico. Camila and Ulla share their time - and their children - while running excursions and managing the academy. The food is fresh, locally grown and hunted and robustly prepared - I could eat dinner at Al Vecchio every night for the rest of my life and be very happy. The little hotel has very comfortable rooms, the town is in an amazing location set along the river at the edge of a pristine national park and the people are incredibly warm. This is not a fast paced, big city environment. This is a very laid back, take your time to enjoy, learn a bit and relax environment. I will return.

Fresh organic food from the immediate area, all produced by local farmers. Simple but cooked to perfection.

We visited as part of a group and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. Marisa, the matriarch of the family which owns the hotel, treated us all like we were relations, and couldn't have been more lovely. Not once did we feel that the hospitality was forced in any way - everyone wanted us to have the best possible time.

We enjoyed wine tasting, we had a cookery lesson taken by Massimo (eldest son), who has the patience of a saint - as we weren't terribly good! - and we went truffle hunting with Giovanni (papa) and Matteo (younger son). We were even shown around the village by Ulla, Matteo's Danish wife. It really is a family affair here.

The food at the hotel was outstanding - everything was simply, but deliciously, cooked, and the breakfast was by far and away the best we've ever had in Italy. The choice was overwhelmingly good.

The bedrooms were great too - antique furniture and all the amenities you'd expect - and spotlessly clean.

We'd highly recommend visiting this area, and this hotel in particular. If you enjoy fine food and drink, then make a beeline for Il Vecchio Convento - though your straining waistband at the end of your visit may not thank you for it! It's truly Italy at its best.

We recently stayed at Al Vecchio Convento with a group from Bath Travel Lymmington England on a cooking and painting holiday. From the moment we arrived to leaving we were treated like extended family members not paying guests. The food was typical of the region, some cooked by our group members. We sampled local cheeses and cold meats, were advised an which wine most suited each and given the opportunity to buy them. We went truffle hunting with a dog in the woods above Portico, found a few black ones but the more expensive white variety were not in season however, we sampled them in a pasta dish the following day.
Our accommodation was clean and comfortable with hairdryer, kettle, shampoo etc, furniture in keeping with the age of the property. The village of Portico di Romagna is delightful though not for those with walking difficulties as it has some steep, cobbled streets, the locals friendly with the opportunity to practise your Italian as few speak English. A wonderful experience, difficult to repeat.

We spend three night at this charming, familyrun hotel. They arranged activities like trufo hunting, vine tasting, cheese tasting. We did even some pasta baking.
We were with a group and we all enjoyed the hostbitality, the good food and the beautiful surroundings.
