“A Great Hotel”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

My wife and I spent a week at Marsalforn on the Isle of Gozo the island its self really doesn’t have much to offer. Marsalforn is a small harbour town which is quite pretty but very small; the small beach is very stony but offers safe bathing. There are many restaurants around the small bay some of which were good and some bad. Would we recommend Malta/Gozo certainly not there are better places to spend hard earned cash.
We stayed in an inland room at the Calypso Hotel Marsalforn which I think is the only hotel in Marsalforn, the hotel was very comfortable with a small swimming pool on the roof. The hotel staff was excellent and could not do enough for the guests, the accommodation was light and airy with nice modern fixtures and fittings, unfortunately our room had a tiny balcony which looked out onto a derelict building, but we weren’t there for the balcony however we would advise getting an upgrade to a better view room. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice but can’t comment on the other meals as we ate in the many restaurants close by. We would recommend the Calypso Hotel but Gozo is not for us it’s far too hot with very little wind. We cross Malta/Gozo off our list.

Room Tip: Sea View rooms are best

Fantastic location overlooking Marsalforn Bay. It is only a short walk to the numerous restaurants and bars. The staff are very friendly and nothing is "too much trouble." My wife has mobility problems and there are mobility friendly ramps to the hotel entrance and roof top pool area. However, the front entrance has a revolving door and the two pull doors next to it do not have electronic opening making it very hard for those with mobility issues.
We first holidayed in Gozo in 1989 and have returned on many occasions since though this was our first stay at the Calypso. I agree with my fellow reviewers that this is an excellent hotel which with further amendment / work would be excellent for those travellers with mobility issues.
The hotel is immaculate and the food is good.
May the new manager keep up his continued good work.
We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: choose sea view room the views are breath taking.

We enjoyed a wonderful 7 night stay at the Calypso Hotel in June. After a very noisy stay on Malta the peace and quiet of Marsalforn and the hotel were a welcome relief! Our room was on the top floor with views over the bay and sea. It was slightly old fashioned but spotlessly clean with a well appointed bathroom and excellent shower; there was a large wardrobe with plenty of hanging space (and plenty of hangers!!!); a safe (for which you pay a refundable deposit); air conditioning; a ceiling fan; partially stocked mini bar; two comfortable chairs; and a large balcony.

The breakfast restaurant was on the first floor and was large with lovely views over the bay. There was plenty of choice of hot and cold food as well as cereals, bread, rolls etc and the chefs were very obliging if people wanted eggs prepared a certain way. The manager quite often circulated around the room chatting with guests.

On the roof there was a small swimming pool surrounded by a terrace with plenty of sun loungers and parasols (these were a bit old fashioned and cumbersome but did the job) as well as a bar with tables and chairs. There was also another restaurant next to the bar but this wasn't open when we were there.

The bus stop for buses to Victoria was located less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The buses came once per hour and were quite busy but everywhere was fairly close so the journeys were not long. As for eating out, Marsalforn has many restaurants to choose from and most of them were located on the edge of the bay. There was a promenade of sorts which went around the point and down into the next bay where there were a couple of restaurants (about 20 minutes walk).

The reception staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and provided us with bus timetables and local information as well as organising our airport transfer. The staff in the breakfast restaurant and bar were always polite and friendly.

If we visit Gozo again we will certainly stay at the Calypso.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room as you will have a lovely view of the harbour and bay as well as the sea.

I have been visiting Gozo since 1997 and apart from the refurbishment years in the early 2000s have always stayed at the Hotel Calypso. What a pleasure to see it returning to its' former glory after a series of mediocre managers. Sammy RAPA is just what this hotel needed, a motivator who is not afraid to get his hands dirty on the "shop floor", so to speak. The staff have always been helpful and very kind but there is now a new spring in their step which is really good to see. Mr. RAPA has some great ideas and I just hope the hotel owners have the foresight to invest where it is needed and let him make this hotel the best on the island

I just read a negative review on this hotel. I'm staying here now and quite frankly the last negative review seems to be like no hotel would satisfy them.
This hotel is lovely. Rooms are very large and spacious. Spotless.
Staff are fantastic. Manager mingles with staff and is always at hand to help.
Food is lovely. Menu is perfect and caters for everyone.
Pool is stunning.
View is breath taking.
Location is ideal. seconds from the beat restaurants in gozo.

I would highly recommend this hotel for both adults and families.

We are sadly departing on Sunday after a two week stay. We have read previous negative reviews and feel they have the wrong hotel! The rooms are spotlessly clean and the furnishings are good quality. The hotel has a quality feel to it and the staff are very attentive. The manager Sammy is a an absolute gent and mingles with the guests, we've had a couple of wine tasting evenings on the terrace for residents at no charge. The terrace and pool area is clean and the pool very refreshing and also clean. We were lucky enough to be given room 311 which has a large balcony with a couple of chairs and a view of the harbour and out to sea, it's heavenly! The room did not have a kettle but on request one was delivered immediately. A perfect hotel in a perfect location, quiet but surrounded by lovely restaurants and bars. We will be back!

Clean, Elegant spacious rooms and excellent views. The pool is situated on the roof of this hotel which is somewhat small but this is compensated with the superb views of Marsalforn Bay. Howevver, the bay is only a 50m away from the Hotel entrance. Many good restaurants in the area.

Room Tip: Sea Front Room is ideal
