“Great staff, great hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2011

My wife and I stayed here with our extended family. The hotel staff were very helpful and polite. We made a number of requests on arrival (e.g. change the cot for a bed, move room so family could be in adjacent rooms). Nothing was a problem and the staff were very happy to accommodate us. The hotel was very clean and the facilities were very good. The food in the restaurant was good quality and the breakfast was plentiful and tasty. I would definately stay here again.

Room Tip: All the rooms were good standard.

stayed here in May.The hotel is clean and most staff friendly and helpful. we had a room at the back, no balcony to speak of, just about managed a chair on it. this didn't bother us as we were out all day. Breakfasts were good, choice of yoghurts, meats, cereal, breads and cooked.

we were disappointed to find that there was only one restaurant open which was the main one, which had a couple of choices, changed daily which we did not use. The brochure said there was a restaurant on the top floor and bar which was never open which was a shame as had lovely views. I think this should be clearly stated when its open before booking hotel. However luckily there were plenty of restaurants to choose from around the harbour.

The swimming pool was much smaller than pictured and also cold, so did not use. The beach in town needed a clean up, so went to Ramla bay which was nice. The bus to the beach was not running in May as not summer season, We had hired a car for 3 days before leaving uk and managed to see most of the island in this time, the rest we used the buses.

The hop on, hop off bus is a good way of seeing the major sites, but local buses go to Victoria (capital) both which leave from Marsalforn.

Visited the island of Comino, which has lovely blue waters. Does get very busy, but you can walk about 25 mins from where ferry drops you to find smaller , quieter bays, but not as picturesque. There are a few small ferry boats at Mgarr harbour willing to take passsengers so you do not have to take organised trips.

Overal all, we had a good week and was good value as we got a good last minute deal, also prefered Gozo to Malta which we visited 20 years ago as alot quieter.

We have been to Malta 3 times now. In 2009 we have been in "Riviera Resort & Spa Malta", in 2010 we have been in "Ramla Bay Resort", both were very good and had a extremely good spa (read my other comments). But both hotels were far away from anything (no restaurants, no sightseeing, no walks, no supermarkets) ... so we decided to to "Calypso Hotel" in Marsalforn this time and we really loved it. The rooms have a great view, the rooms are very clean, the beds were extzremely comfortable and the breakfast was excelent. You can even order fresh made omlet which will be made right in front of your eyes. (I did only miss the baked beans, but I could live without ;-)).

You even have free WIFI within the romms with good quality (we did even stream videos, upload Pictures, etc).

The pool is on the roof top and gives a perfect view about marsalforn and the mediteranian sea. The pool is clean and free sun beds are available. There is also a roof top bar that offers alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks till midnight. Perfect to view the stars while have a good cocktail :-)

And if you like good food there are 7 restaurants just 1min away from the hotel. So you will find whatever you like fur lunch or dinner (please see my other reviews for my favorite restaurants next to the hotel).

There are even two supermarkets in about 5-10min walking distance. both supermarkets are very small but suply all you will need regarding fresh food, chilled meat, (non)alcoholic drinks etc. We were extremly suprised and happy.

The Bus station is only 5min from the hotel and buses to ramly bay and the gozo ferry go every hour (line 322) and if you wanne go to Victoria or The Azoure Window there is another bus (line 306) that also goes every hour. You will find more information on the new bus transport system here: www.arriva.com.mt/file.aspx?f=157.
We recommend to use the public transport bus system to get around as a day ticket only costs 2,60€, but of course you can also use the hop on hop off bus from Gozo SightSeeing. It costs about 18€ per day and person but will go to all locations in a regular circle.

And there are a lot of walks you can do from Marsalforn: eg: walking the salt pans.

This was our first visit to Gozo for 25 years, the Hotel Calypso is still on the same site but seems to have been completely rebuilt. It is now a modern hotel with good facilities including a small roof top pool.
All the staff were very helpful and went out of their way ensure our stay was totally relaxing, the dining room staff made a point of chatting to us whenever they had time.
We booked a Sea View room (410), this was rather small but was well furnished and spotlessly clean. The mattress seemed almost new but was very hard and would have been better with a mattress topper.
A couple of gripes - there is a daily charge for use of the safety deposit box, and in room tea/coffee making facilities cost an extra 3.50 euros a day. On the plus side there is free WiFi thoroughout the hotel.
This is a modern, comfortable hotel which retains a level of personal servce seldom found in a hotel of this class.

Room Tip: The Sea View rooms are worth the extra charge and get the evening sun, but try to avoid rooms 110, 2...

Marsalforn is a short ferry trip from the Malta Mainland then about 30 mins to hotel itself.
Check in was okay but not over friendly, some of the receptionists are quite abrupt. Also despite billing itself as a 4* there was no offer of help with the luggage or to show us the room. We were just given keys and told time of breakfast.
The room we were given had twin beds and was very spacious and very clean. The beds however were very hard and not very comfy. Only 1 pillow but at our request we soon got an extra one. We also had a spacious balcony overlooking the bay and the sea but we had paid extra for this.
The TV had limited stations mostly Italian.
The breakfast was served until 10am and was plentiful and good. Omlette maker was a bit surly though and not very good.
The swimming pool was the biggest let down. The pictures of the hotel are very misleading and the pool was extremely small more of a dip pool. When we did try it the water was extremely cold. Also you have to get the sun bed cushions and umbrellas yourself as they aren't automatically set up and no one there most of the time to assist, once again not a 4* service. You also have to leave a 10 euro deposit which is returned at the end of the holiday once you hand the towels over, you can change them as often as needed but have to do this at reception.
Better to swim in the sea as it is crystal clear and pristine and wherever you went there was access to the water via steps.
There was a small rocky beach near the hotel, go to the end of the restaurants on the bay and climb the steps then turn left at the top and follow the road, it is 5 mins away and you can hire sunbeds for 7 euros a day. It is lovely and much better then staying by the pool. Also look out for the diving dog who also rides a motorbike.!
The room we had was kept very clean by the maids but another example of not being 4* was that quite regularly the hotel towels were holey!

Room Tip: Pay extra for bay or sea view, it is worth the extra. Also get an upper floor room as there are seve...

We spent a Night here after our holiday co messed up so probably weren't in the best of moods. However hotel was pleasant enough staff were friendly although the reception staff were not very warm. The swimming pool was salt water and a real disappointment with worrying cables hanging down in it.
