Electra Guest house
Ranked #3 of 9 Hotels in Marsalforn
Reviewed October 19, 2012

Enjoy the family and friends who surround the Electra guest house, the good value accommodation, the views from a front facing bedroom, the smart interiors in an old house, the generous English breakfasts, the great position in Marsalforn Bay, and understand all the good intentions . When the enthusiasm and kindness lead to overbooking and room reallocation we just saw it as part of the Gozitan experience!

Room Tip: Inner rooms are cheaper but pay for the view..go on .

We stayed in an excellently remodelled room. Its also right by the little beach in Marsalforn and the bus station. Heartwarmingly friendly service by the very nice, authentic and friendly owners! It's also really good value. I would always go again.

Spent a week on Gozo learning to dive with Scuba King and as a single traveller was booked into what was described to me as a bed and breakfast. My thoughts were it sounds good value and I just need somewhere to sleep so I a not too bothered about the quality. As it turned out the setting and accommodation were well beyond what I expected. All the rooms have been recently refurbished and look really smart. The hotel/cafe/restaurant is a family run business and Joanna and her husband make you really feel welcome. Nothing is too much trouble and the bedrooms were kept spotless throughout my visit. As well as eating there, the location right in the bay meant that I often just sat outside reading my book, sipping wine after a long day diving - heaven! A telling sign was how it was obviously a gathering place for local people first thing in the morning to have a coffee/ breakfast and catch up before they went to work. Its not a 'swanky 5 star hotel' before anyone gets a false impression, it is a simple, good quality guest house very much reflecting the relaxed, friendly spirit of Gozo. Overall effect, trouble free stay, felt well looked after, good value and I would definitely stay there again.

Many thanks to all at Electra

Philip

Room Tip: Perhaps consider asking for a room with a balcony at the front as it gets the sun all day from that...

Electra gives a great service, especially excellent home-made food. It is a newly refurbished guesthouse, and the refurbishment must have been costly because the place is really pleasant. The rooms with a seaview are a paradise, especially for couples or lone travellers. You can actually see the sea right in front of you from a spacious balcony. Electra is great value for money.

Room Tip: Choose a seaview room, unless you're travelling on a strict budget. Choose half-board, because...

Electra is a small guesthouse perfectly situated on the Marsalforn strip, close to the bus stop. It is also a restaurant that specializes in pizza and traditional gozitan food.

Electra's style reflects the price, in that you get what you pay for. The rooms are small and simple, but scrupulously clean and fairly modern. The sea-view rooms (€30 per person/night) have a balcony facing the harbour and an air conditioner system, whereas the cheaper (€26) internal rooms are dark and somewhat claustrophobic, and are only fitted with ceiling fans. The AC, where available, is coin-operated, with €1 lasting perhaps half a day.

Overall, this is a bare-bones guesthouse that is most suitable for travelers who just want a place to sleep and keep their belongings. It is not

Positives:

* The price, obviously. €30/night for a sea-view room includes breakfast.
* The location is as perfect as it gets in Marsalforn.
* Good food. The restaurant serves Marsalforn's best pizza, and stays open until midnight.
* Free laundry service (apparently -- I don't believe I was charged for it).
* Very clean.

Negatives:

* If you are sensitive to air conditioning, you will find the AC unusable at night as it blows directly towards the bed. During my trip, temperatures reached 38C and not much less during the night, making some nights quite unbearable.
* The bathroom lighting is badly designed (ceiling-fitted instead of wall-fitted, meaning you cast shadows onto your own body). It's literally impossible to determine if you have acquired a sunburn, or to see if you have shaved properly, and I imagine it's completely useless for applying makeup.
* In my (single-bed) room, there was no bed-side lamp or table. Reading in the evening with the extremely bright ceiling lights was very annoying. I don't know if the larger rooms have a nightstand.
* Similarly, the balcony does not have any lighting, nor a table.

Overall, the negatives are fairly minor, but should be considered when booking.

We were recommended this place for pizza and it was much better than anywhere else, though we only stuck to pizzas.

We ate here a few times, as it was so good, sensibly priced and with interesting options. I couldn't comment on the other menu options though.

The only bad point was the service was very slow, even compared to other Gozitan places. But we were never in much of a rush and we worked it out pretty quickly and never arrived famished or with appointments - the pizzas were worth the waiting about.

The front rooms have a good view but are unsuitable for 3 persons (very small, both room and bathroom), the back rooms are bigger but they don't have air condition. Also, the view from the back rooms is not what you want to see being on vacation.
In the front rooms, AC is available but costs an additional charge per use. The hotel is too expensive for what it offers, we paid 75 euros for 2 adults and 1 child in this awfully small front room so we had to leave after the first night - and had to pay an additioinal 75 euros for the right to leave.
It might be OK for a single person or a couple who want to be in the centre of Marsalforn but if you are a family and/or have a car it is definitely not the place you want to be in Marsalforn.
The breakfast is a choice between full English (for those who you like it) and a fruit salad which was obviously not freshly made (from the day before at best). Coffee was OK but noone seemed to care if we might like more of it.
