“What a gem of a getaway!”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

Thank goodness for tripadvisor - I was looking for a place to take my wife to celebrate 10 years of marriage and the place we had got married all those years ago (the Horn of Plenty, nr Gulworthy) was fully booked...for someone else's wedding (fair nuff, hope they had a very good time).
Wanted to find somewhere relatively close by, and this place I'd never heard of before pops up as a high percentage rating. Did a little more research, phoned up for a guide on price and was very taken with the friendly, professional and informative manner of the ladies I spoke with - a good sign already. Easily arranged for some champers to be in the room on arrival and a masseuse session for my good lady wife mid-afternoon.
The manor itself is a splendid pile with an interesting history all of its own, not sprawling but well-sized with 14 rooms in total and some lovely grounds to stroll around in. All the staff were friendly and talkative, especially the owners who were often around and helping out. I had the cheek to ask if I could borrow an iPhone/iPad charger (as I'd forgotten mine) and one of the owners very selflessly lent me her own one overnight - just one example of how well you are looked after and catered for here.
The evening meal was absolutely superb, with each course being a delight to eat and unexpected but very welcome mini-dishes in between the three main ones - I can honestly say that it was one of the very best meals I've ever experienced, and there's a decent set of restaurants close to where we live in and around the South Hams.
Truly, this was a very very pleasant surprise indeed and we will most definitely be returning when the occasion arises again - thank you everyone so much at Lewtrenchard Manor!

Room Tip: We stayed in the St Gertrude room, which is on the far side of the gallery after coming up the stair...

We have been many times to Lewtrenchard manor under the Von Essen banner . Having lived abroad for a few years it was so good to see this lovely old manor returned to its former owners .
The hotel and grounds are looking just great .
We joined a small party of guests for a Spanish food and wine evening .great experience and good to try some very quirky wines ! Food excellent under the new chef.
Breakfast good .cant wait to return

This beautiful 15th century hotel had a lovely friendly atmosphere and provided an afternoon tea which was a real experience. We were encouraged to have a look around the house before deciding where we would like our tea served. The sandwiches had nice fillings, the cakes all homemade and the scones were still warm. The weather just allowed us to have a quick walk around the grounds and enjoy the views. The price at £17.50 was a reflection on the surroundings, but more than substantial

Super service. Food excellent. However, ambience a little stilted and formal for our taste. Room (nonnington) needs some tlc. Felt that £7 for a coffee and cold drinking chocolate delivered to our room ( as no facilities ), a bit rich... though sensed most of the clientele were.

Recently had our Wedding here, (we have been to the hotel as guests at another Wedding previously)
We were hugely disappointed in the service, food, and presentation.
It is a beautiful setting for a wedding, but many of our guests (who regularly eat in similar standard establishments), felt it was not what you would expect for the cost, and we felt the same.
There were mix-ups over arrangements, course choices, and the food was cold, this was absolutely not fine dining.
If it were down to food and service during the meal, we would rate this experience poorly, its only saving grace being the setting.
Thus far the attempts by the owners to appease the situation, have been poor, and excuses rife.
As for the accommodation, the smell of oil in the foyer was offensive, the owners admitted other people have made the same complaint but that they hadnt had anyone say the smell was also in the room and that they would have an engineer out to look at it. I was also told they kept the outside door open to the foyer (clearly to dissipate the smell)
We were a party of 63, and it appears this causes difficulties when you have a menu choice (even though the choices were made well in advance, and we were told at our first meeting it would not be a problem), which evidently it was.
We are not happy at all.

We have been visiting Lewtrenchard Manor since the early nineties and have always loved it. However when it passed into the hands of a large hotel chain we visited for lunch and found no reason to return.
Now it is back in the capable hands of the Murrey family and the beautiful old building has got it's heart back.
The food is exceptional, absolutely faultless, and whatever you do have the afternoon tea and biscuits. The homemade shortcake is unbelievable! The grounds are beautiful and there are lovely walks to be had.
The housekeeping is remarkable: though they make your bed while you are at breakfast even if you are leaving that day (in addition to the proper clean later) and they turn down your bed while you are at dinner, I have yet to spot a chambermaid. None of the old trolleys and piles of laundry in the corridors you find in much grander hotels: everything is done beautifully and unobtrusively.
Breakfast is a proper English breakfast, none of you continental rubbish! Fresh fruit, yoghurt with fresh fruit purees, cereals, juice, then a cooked breakfast of your choice and pastries to follow.
It is a haven of loveliness and they even turn the fountain off at night so nothing disturbs your rest.

Room Tip: All the room are lovely and very comfortable; I think we have stayed in pretty well every one!

We went for two nights and everything was perfect. The staff are so polite and are up from the crack of dawn to late at night to cater for all your needs with no fuss.

The food is amazing and the building is over 1000 years old and very impressive. The bedroom was very comfortable and nice views over the grounds.

The location is quite isolated which means it's an amazingly peaceful getaway.

Can't really think of anything else I would've wanted.
