“Charming Hotel, Owners and Staff, perfect base for the Polar Express Train Ride.”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

Beautiful, secluded manor house in lovely grounds. Very warm welcome by the Receptionist for myself, husband and 2 young children. Delightful and delicious lunch in the hotel bar in front of a real log fire. Spacious, comfortable and warm bedroom on a cold night. We were visiting the area as a treat for the children along with a ride on the Polar Express. Will stay again when in the area. Very reasonable rates considering the all round quality and attention to detail provided by the lovely and friendly owners Mr and Mrs Marray and their son.

Room Tip: I expect that they are all lovely - ours was in the stable!

This is a beautiful old Jacobean Manor (don't go if you don't like dark wood panelling) in lovely gardens.
Grand log fires and a warm greeting offered a lovely welcome on a very cold night. Service is the name of the game here and you can expect to be treated as an individual with nothing being too much trouble.
The hotel had been flooded the week before but they were back up and running and trying to discreetly limit the damage. It in no way adversely effected my stay.

We have just returned from three nights at Lewtrenchard Manor. What a lovely relaxing weekend in spite of the awful weather.
The hotel contacted us on the day of our arrival after a bad flood had left them without hot water. They offered alternative accommodation at a local pub until it was fixed but we decided to stay with them anyway. Full marks for what must have been a monumental effort to get everything up and running. Hot water was restored the following morning.
We were met by open fires and old world charm. The Murray family and their staff did a wonderful job of making you feel at home. It felt more like staying with friends than staying at an hotel. Our dog Millie was made welcome by resident hound Spencer and we whiled away several hours playing games by the fire as Duncan (Murray) popped in and out making sure our glasses were never empty (and being a mine of information on obscure car logos!)
And then there was the food. Excellent. We had dinner at the hotel on two of the nights. The first night had been so good I was tempted to repeat the same menu for fear of being disappointed with a different choice. I wasn't disappointed. Quite often food that looks almost too pretty to eat can be an anticlimax. This wasn't.
If you are looking for mod cons and contemporary bathrooms then this won't be for you. However, if you are looking for relaxing in the comfort of an old manor that feels like staying with friends then Lewtrenchard Manor should be your destination.

Lewtrenchard Manor has a lunch "special" for November so we took advantage of this and went to celebrate my birthday The atmosphere was calm and everyone was efficient and our compliments on such a grand job in getting up and running in such a short time after the flood on Wednesday - we wouldn't have noticed if we'd not been told. On to the wine and food. Sitting in the bar in front of a lovely log fire on comfortable seating with a suberb wine was the living end. And, without being rushed we then went into the restaurant where we had the most devine food. A little starter soup with freshly baked bread followed by Cornish Plaice with coconut, lemongrass and spiced onion and for my main course Roast Hake, crab cake with curried oyster mayonnaise. After the soup my husband had the Goats cheese Waldorf salad continuing onto his main course with Devon Quail, confit veg, cauliflower and golden raisin. From beginning to end the subtle tastes were unbelieveable and again our compliments, this time, going to the Chef. We decided to return to the bar for a coffee as we hadn't room for a pudding. All in all a delightful time was had and we can't praise the staff enough.

We spent 5 nights at Lewtrenchard Manor - a real gem of a hotel with a personal touch, the Murray family and their staff are welcoming, attentive and create a great relaxing country house atmosphere, nothing is too much trouble for them. The building and grounds are beautiful with a fascinating history - if you are in a courtyard room don't miss taking a visit to the Gallery in the main house. We ate in each evening and the food was amazing - top marks to the kitchen staff, and since the menu is fairly short offered to cook anything we fancied if we did not want to repeat dishes. They will bring you morning tea/coffee to your room or you can have a hospitality tray and make it yourself. Some might say a downside is the lack of mobile signal and limited internet access but to be honest no it's not - it's refreshing to be excused permanent connectivity. If you want to get away from it all and steep yourself in a bit of luxury then this is the place, we were very sad to have to leave and go back to reality.

We came here for my 40th birthday and had a lovely time. The roaring fires and wood pannelling took us back in time. The ornate staircase and ornaments were stunning. Our bedroom was comfortable and in keeping with the historical feel. Teas and coffees can be brought to your room but not made as there are no kettles in bedrooms. We had a lovely view of the grounds and enjoyed a walk in the woods. Breakfast was nice. The dining room has a very formal feel. We would go back but often favour hotels with spa facilities which this does not have. Nevertheless a real treat.

My husband and I came years ago several times at The Lewtrenchard Manor. We stopped when Von Essen took over the place. When we heard that the Murray family were back at The Lewtrenchard, we booked immediatly for four nights for the end of September. And yes, it was like coming home! Everything is so perfect. Go back in time. Log fires in beautiful paneled rooms, with beautiful ceilings, stained glass windows, etc. The manorhouse itself, the gardens, the grounds, all together it's a real gem. The rooms are stylish and very comfortable furnished. (We love the Getrude.) The food is excellent. Breakfast, lunch, diner, everything got that very high standard as you hope for. We think that The Lewtrenchard Manor with the Murray family and their staff are an award winning team! Many thanks and we'll come back. Les and Ans Lommers - Holland (Beemster)
