“A beautiful place to visit; rich in history”
Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I happened upon this place in a guidebook about Tuscany. It was established by St Francis in the 13th century. The reference didn't do it proper justice. On the sprawling grounds there chapels, grottos, expansive vistas, a restaurant, and even an hotel. The gift shop holds a treasure trove of gifts, souvenirs, and tasty treats made by the members of the convent.

If you're visiting Tuscany (it's nearby Arezzo) and would like to visit a site off the well-worn path, visit Sanctuario Della Verna.

“Sanctuario Della Verna”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

I visited the Sanctuary of La Verna in September. My son was a novitiate friar there and I attended his first profession. This is one of the most peaceful and serene places I have ever seen. It sits atop a mountain situated just above Chiusi Della Verna. The views of the valley below are breathtaking. The accommodations were excellent and in immaculate condition, especially considering they are hundreds of years old. Just by coincidence, we stayed in the same room that Blessed John Paul II stayed in when he visited the Sanctuary in 1991.

It is an incredible spiritual experience and one I highly recommend to anyone looking to strengthen their already strong faith or looking to renew it.

“peace away from the throngs”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

When I first visited La Verna I was amazed at the peace and tranquility of the setting. Set up on the top of a mountain it is quiet and cool (even in summer). This is the place where St. Francis spent his final years and visitors can see where he lived and even the large rock where he slept. It is a retreat for religious orders but anyone can absorb the tranquility of the place and rejuvenate his soul. Religion does not slap you in the face like a televangelist but creeps into your soul like a quiet breeze. What a pleasant release from the hustle and bustle of many of the cities. I have revisited it with other friends so that they can share it as well.

“A mountaintop oasis.”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We first visited La Verna last year and wanted to return. Although it was quieter in September than on our previous visit in June there were still very many visitors, but it was still possible to enter into the spirit of this very special place. There were various places within the monastery where people were completely silent, lit candles, prayed, whilst other parts were far more bustling and noisy - but that felt fine. I love the tiny chapel-cave, in the rockside, which you access from the main corridor, which is decorated by amazing frescoes; there is a real sense of peace and of one-ness with the natural world and everyone seemed to be affected by this atmosphere. Finally, I find the huge simple wooden cross, which stands outside the church and towers over the surrounding countryside, a really powerful image.
