Mai Dive is a very special place. With good contact with Danielle prior to arriving we felt like we were arriving to a village in itself. Simple elegant cabins with only screens to the sea breeze, mosquito nets, lovely soft beds and outdoor showers. Jason and Danielle were great hosts and have a fabulous team of people working with them. I had not dived for 18 years and both Jason and Petero, a master diver, were reassuring after such a long break. The diving was great - fabulous coral ,great bommies, fantastic caves and tunnels and abundant fish life. Snorkling directly off the beach (in progress to be a marine reserve) was just as rich in fish, as were the snorkling trips we made to the Astrolabe reef - 5 minutes by boat directly out from Mai Dive. An incredible experience was snorkling with the manta rays- amazing to be up close to such magnificent graceful creatures.
We spent a wonderful Friday eve at Narikoso village with a kava ceremony and dancing both by the villagers and (hilariously) ourselves. We felt privileged to visit and will long remember it.
The food by by the gorgeous girls in the kitchen, Filo, Ma, La and Ana was delicious- amazing cakes and doughnuts, fresh fish and curries- divine! Joe, Jasons dad has created, amongst much else, a huge organic vegetable garden which we enjoyed the fruits of, and flitered the natural spring water which is so much better than anything you would get from a bottle. We thank Joe, Jason and Danielle for such a wonderful stay ,we were so well looked after and we will most definately return.

Just what we were looking for but Mai Dive still exceeded our expectations! e-mail contact before we arrived meant that Danielle and Jason had a good idea of the kind of holiday we were looking for and everything just seemed to happen like magic. Two of us did a Discover Scuba course by way of a scuba refresher after a long break from it. Jason was an excellent instructor, pitching the theory and practice at just the right level. Well maintained gear and highly competent boatmen added to our sense of confidence. The diving was superb with wide variety between the different sites we went to. The snorkelling on the reef and from the beach was also great - 20 paces from the bed to the beach is my kind of heaven :-) Snorkelling with the manta rays was a veru special expereince and was a highlight of the trip and the year!
Jo, Jason, Danielle and the staff do an exceptional job making their guests feel welcome, as do the people of Narikoso village where we went for a memorable Friday afternoon of kava ceremony, entertainment and dancing.
The food at Mai Dive is fabulous- - fresh local food, some from their own garden but the higlight was Filo's wonderful baking especially the freshly baked goodies for breakfast each day!
It was very hard to leave and will be very easy to go back - hopefully before too long :-)

We recently returned from a 9 nite trip to Ono Island, the small island north of Kadavu. We stayed and dived with Mai Dive which is owned and operated by Jason & his wife Danielle.

Mai Dive is about 5 minutes from the Astrolabe Reef and the diving was terrific. We spent a lot of time on a wide variety of diving, including inside and outside the Astrolabe and were impressed with the critter sightings....sea snake, pipehorses, lots of sharks, clownfish in several differently colored brilliant anemones, eagle rays, blue spotted rays, potato cod, sweetlips, BIG morays and BIG mantas plus the entire cast of Pacific tropicals and hard/soft corals. Jason works hard at providing the optimal diving experience for each diver and we found him and his DMs to be safety conscious but not overbearing. Jason grew up diving these waters and he and his crew know them like the back of their hand. One day there were 7 divers in our boat but most of the trip it was just the two of us, sometime there were two or three others. His rental gear was well-maintained and practically new and his boats were fast. We've done quite a bit of private boat diving and Mai Dive has the most capable and knowledgeable captains we've encountered.

We had an intimate spacious bungalow at the end of the beach with our own big deck only feet from the beach, and we appreciated the comfortable beds and an outside hot shower for after dives. The food was delicious and varied, and the ladies doing the cooking have a great handle on baked goods! We enjoyed menus featuring produce from their large organic garden for our meals and snacks.

The resort is located on the east side of Ono and the entire time we were there we never saw another dive boat. It was like having the resort and the island to ourselves, and the entire staff went out of their way to make us feel at home, quickly granting any request made. Our evening spent in the village which the boat captains and some of the resort staff lived in was very likely the most "authentic" Fijian experience to be had in the islands.

A highlight of our stay was the time we spent with 5-7 mantas just a short boatride from Mai Dive. I filled up a 2g card with very close encounters from several angles as the big guys just noted our presence, and then went on about their feeding and circling over a cleaning station.....it alone was worth the trip!

For non-divers, the village visit, snorkeling, shell seeking, and kayak tours would make for a great vacation as well.

I would like to thank all the folks on this forum for their good insights and helpful PMs. The Fiji dollar has been devalued and Air Pacific has some great fares from LAX so it was less than the cost of some trips we've made to the Caribbean from Texas.

Mai Dive is a small, undiscovered "special place" in the Pacific and we intend to return as soon as possible.

Ono is a small island off kadavu and is a place that is virtually untouched, no noise, no pollution, just clean pristine conditions. The air is crisp and clear, water beautiful and sweet, surrounds lush and green. The proprietors of Mai dive Resort, Joe, Jason, Danielle and the staff Marie and Fillo, Cooky and Swiva are always just full of fun and laughter.

Accommodation is very simple, but still very, very comfortable. All meals are cooked fresh every time by the wonderful staff Marie and Fillo and always great to eat.

Diving was out of this world, with great swim throughs, Coral reefs, and great beaches to have a break on between dives and so on. Another great part was snorkeling with the Manta rays, which are big, beautiful and very gracious animals. The trip to the water fall is a must, especially on a hot day as the dip in the pool at the base is really very refreshing.

For people who want to get away from a busy life style and forget the world, then this is the place to go.

A week a Mai Dive was a gem. The diving exceeded expectations, with short boat trips, great reefs, swim throughs and drift dives. Plus snorkelling and shore diving from the beach. Very quiet - its a small resort currently accommodating 6-12 people in lovely cabins - and without a boat you are trapped between the lagoon and jungle. Not a lot for non-divers to do except relax or participate in the activities organized by Jason and Danielle ( village visit, waterfall walk, snorkelling with mantas and sunset booze-cruise to an adjacent island to see the birds settling in for the night). Food and staff excellent

We spent the most relaxing holidays in this beautiful secluded resort. Lovely decorated bungalow (very important for women: hot water!! ;-)) , excellent food, friendly staff and the owner Jason and Danielle were really attentive and did everything to feel like home. Thanks to Papa Joe for his interesting stories about the Fiji style and culture! Great dive spots, especially the Purple Wall and the equipment was state of the art.
Vinaka and moce!

This resort is on a small scale but that was what we were looking for.
Just a nice bungalow at the beachfront with a hammock in front to watch the sunrise.
Beautiful Fijian and Western dishes, welcoming staff, perfect host and hostess.
How beautiful can life be!
The diving (all new gear) at the Astrolabe Reef (only 10 min. by boat) was amazing. Beautiful bommies, pinacles and canyons all covered by the most stunning corals and anemones. We experienced supurb snorkeling with the Manta Rays close by.
Already from the first emails we exchanged with Danielle and Jason (the hosts) we got the feeling we were most welcome. We didn't lose this feeling during our stay. It was beautiful!
