“A wee taste of perfection nestled in the Scottish Borders!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012

We went here for my mother's 70th birthday celebrations and it was the perfect place for a quality event. There were 14 of us in total and the evening started with champagne and canapés (quails eggs and haggis balls). After being shown to our table the meal was started with an amuse bouche of carrot soup with chorizio. Each guest had chosen their own 3 course menu, highly recommended mains were the partridge, ribeye beef, hake. There was even a great vegetarian option of split pea fritter (gorgeous). Side portions have to be ordered, so we shared some vegetables and chips for the table, however each dish is perfectly complemented by the additions on the plate. The staff were perfect examples of hospitality and are a credit to the establishment. From the very first welcome by the manager through to our cheerful barman who patiently kept us good company into the wee small hours :-) they were all great.
The restaurant has also rooms out the back in the converted old school. There are 8 in total - these are very nice (although ours was a little cold, but this was quickly sorted by an additional radiator which was promptly provided).
Would recommend this restaurant for any sort of visitor from couples to small groups.

Room Tip: There are 8 rooms in total and I believe 7 are of a similar standard and size, but there is a larger...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at The Horseshoe; your kind words will be very much appreciated by the Team and I am pleased that we helped to make your Mother's 70th Birthday Party Celebrations a memorable occasion.
My wife and I were dining at The Horseshoe on Saturday evening and from what I could see, you appeared to be enjoying yourselves at the table and afterwards in the lounge.
Hopefully, we will see you again if you return to the Scottish Borders.

Kindest regards

David and Jean

If you only want to read one line of this review, then this will be it - there is nothing other than brilliance happening at the Horseshoe Inn.

My wife and I stopped there by chance for lunch on our way to Peebles where we had intended to stay for a few nights. The environment of the Inn is very relaxing, warm and welcoming and Front of House staff could simply not have been nicer. They have a lovely balance between professional service and a gently, humorous familiarity. They really do have that service style absolutely on the money.

We were so impressed with lunch that after discovering they were a restaurant with rooms, we changed our acommodation schedule in Peebles and came back to book dinner and a room. When we popped in very impromptu to make that booking, Head Chef, Riad was sat in enthusiastic discussion with his chef associate, planning menus and talking with an infectious enthusiams about idea, plans, fresh produce and unusual twists, debates over chestnut or walnuts and food combinations that would make you melt without even seeing a menu. They were both very welcoming and such likeable guys that we knew we were in for a great night. These weren't pompose Chef's but down to earth great guys who love the comoradery of other food lovers. It turned out that Riad's wife also worked there and this delighteful lady made us incredibly welcome.

Dinner that night was quiet in terms of numbers but it didn't change the pleasure of being there and the food was totally out of this world. Trust me - these guys so know what they are doing with their menu and their standards are exceptional.

The rooms by the way are lovely - just remember this is a restaurant with rooms, not a hotel. You have the luxury of crashing out in a comfortable room after dinner and save yourself the drive home. Oh...and the breakfast is worth every secondf and mouthful. The best poached eggs ever,,,,,apart from mine!

So, that night was so good that despite another accommodation commitment at a hotel in Peebles we managed to cancel our Dinner deal with them and instead go back to the Horseshoe Inn for yet another dinner. On this ocassion Mark, the GM, was on call and could not have been a more charming or welcoming host.

I'd actually consider moving to Peebles just to eat here every night! As a foot note I should add that I have worked in this industry at a high level, as has my wife and we don't throw great praise too liberally but in this case the team here deserve all the praise they can get.

Thank you guys and we cant wait to come back....and yes, your dog Riad IS a Bichon Frize!

Have just returned from a 1 night stay at this Inn and cannot praise the staff, service and astonishing food highly enough.
On arrival check in was friendly efficient and personal. nothing is overlooked, attention to small detail is visible.
We have eaten in many restaurants in many countries and the food in this small Inn was of the highest quality.
I chose a wine but after discussing my choice changed to the recommendation based on how I described my preferences. It was delicious, well done and thank you.
Our room was a good size and clean if just a little twee.
Only suggestion and it is no more than that, a little background music would have added to the atmosphere.I felt people were whispering because it was so quiet.
On saying this we had a wonderful evening and would most certainly recommend without hesitation.

Room Tip: we had a premier it was a decent size and quiet.

Thank you very much for taking the time to tell others of your first experience of Horseshoe hospitality; your kind words will be greatly appreciated by the staff who do their best to make our guests' stay a memorable one.

We also value your comment regarding background music; on a quiet evening, I agree that there is a place for it. Our GM has recently played his selection and very shortly, I'm going to add mine!

We look forward to welcoming you back to The Horseshoe on your next visit to the Scottish Borders but in the meantime, kindest regards.

We stayed in the Horseshoe Inn for one week and are really delighted about everything this Inn has to offer. The breakfast for starters is better than everywhere else we have stayed. The level of service is extremely high: just sit down at your table and enjoy! The dinner-menu is French style: no large portions but real quality and perfectly seasoned. The staff is very friendly and professional. It is also a good place when you want to visit Edinburg: the bus to Edinburg stops on the opposite side and takes you to the center of Edinburg.

Thank you for your kind words; they will be very much appreciated by a Team that focuses on making the Guest experience a memorable one.

I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Horseshoe; the Scottish Borders has so much to offer and as you pointed out, being on a bus route affords our clientelle the opportunity of either heading north to Edinburgh (a city which has so much to offer) or south to some of the unique Border Towns.

Kindest regards

We stopped off here on our way to Edinburgh to break down the travelling. We arrived at 8.30pm and had a lovely meal and bottle of wine in the bar and would like to thank the staff for their lovely manners and professionalism. Our room was spotless, with tea and coffee and cake provided which was a nice touch. The only complaint was the room felt quite cold and if it wasn't for the thick duvet on the bed I don't think we would have had much sleep. Also could hear someone snorring in the next room! Breakfast was lovely with choices off a menu which set us up for the day ahead. Thank you for a pleasant stay!

Room Tip: Take full length PJ's to keep warm in the winter

Had a weekend here with my partner, I booked this place mostly because of the TA reviews of the food.

First impressions are fine, room was small but clean and well presented, we did notice that it was pretty cold, even with the radiator going full blast, this is probably because the window is only single glazed, you can really feel the cold coming through. The guy who showed us the room said there was an additional heater, but it looked like a portable fan/air conditioner to me.

We ate in the bistro the first night, I had fish and chips which was fine, not great, came as goujons and batter wasn't very crisp. My partner had a rib eye steak which was £20, came undercooked and had to go back to the kitchen. Not a great meal at all. Maybe the fine dining is much better, we didn't want a full 4 or 5 course meal.

First night slept fine, there weren't many other people staying in the accommodation.

Next morning I enjoyed my breakfast, the server was a Bulgarian lady, really helpful. My partner opted for a lie in and she made up a tray with a bacon sandwich for him and pastries and juice, very much appreciated. It would be better if they actually had some salt and pepper on the table instead of having to request it whilst the food cools.

We opted not to dine in on the Saturday night as the food on Friday wasn't up to much.

Saturday night the accommodation was full, and we discovered that the walls are uninsulated, as we could hear the conversations of the people in the next room, and later, we could hear snoring all night, really not ideal. Between that and the draughty window it lets down the place down.

Sunday breakfast again I really enjoyed, though my partners "take away" bacon sandwich did get served to me stone cold, I guess most people do manage to get up in time to eat the breakfast which finishes at 9:30. They had also ran out of tomato sauce, and again salt and pepper had to be requested, which is annoying.

Overall it was an okay place but not great, the insulation issues in the accommodation which make it cold and noisy really need to be fixed.

We had a lovely stay here. Our room was comfortable, spotlessly clean and quiet. The best thing was that it was so close to the restaurant! We ate in the bistro and really enjoyed the daily specials, next time we'll treat ourselves to a meal in the restaurant. The breakfast next morning was also fabulous! The hotel is situated in a little village not far from Peebles so it's easy to burn the calories from all the food too. A little gem with great service and charm.
