Firstly, really would be three and half if I could rate it like that but was feeling generous. We had a very nice stay on a deal via Classic Britain and was excellent value for money, no arguments there.

On arrival it's very strange there is no big sign from the main road to help you find the turn off, but the drive up to the hotel is nice and it's a lovely building.

The public areas are great and seemed freshly refurbished, the bar and restaurant surroundings are nice, comfortable and modern. You can easily while away a few hours relaxing in the bar area (as I did).

The bedroom we had was a little more dated. Clean enough and comfortable but could do with a bit of a refresh. We found the bed a little uncomfortable as well and we both woke up each morning with a slightly achy back. We also asked for an accessible room as we had a baby and a dog but ended up down several corridors and up and down several sets of stairs. Great, however, they allow dogs without a surcharge and the baby was made more than welcome in all the public areas.

The restaurant needs to improve. While the surroundings are nice the food, although presented in a posh way, is nothing better than average, ok but average. An example of this was a steak I ordered medium and which turned up on the well done side of well done! Fairly basic cooking I would have thought, I was offered a new one but could not be bothered waiting. Also the service on the second night was poor with one waiter looking after all the tables and was a bit slow. Not the waiters fault (Barry) who was exceptional and very friendly, just a shame he does not have the food to serve that would make the all round experience much better. We also found a bit of a disconnect between the bar and the restaurant. For example we ordered coffee to have in the lounge after dinner but we had to remind then to make it! Service could be improved here.

Breakfast was better, a good selection and freshly prepared with plenty of choice. Very nice.

Overall would still recommend a stay here and we had a very nice time. The staff are excellent and very friendly and location is good to access Peebles and surrounding areas. Would consider returning for another stay on a similar deal.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to post your review on tripadvisor.
As we have recently been taken over by Mercure we were unable to keep the previous DeVere sign at the bottom of our drive, so there was a short period of time that we were without assign. You will be pleased to hear that we now have our new sign installed.

I’m sure that you will also be pleased to hear that we have now replaced our beds.

I have passed your feedback relating to the restaurant to our head chef aand food and beverage manager who have assured me that they will take this on board and have put new training procedures in to action.

Was at this hotel at the weekend for a family wedding. My wife and i were very impressed with the whole experience of the wedding occasion from the day before until the morning after. The staff were very welcoming and attentive even during a fire alarm which turned out to be a false alarm. If anyone is thinking of staying here for whatever reason i would recommend that they do.

This was my 2nd stay here, the 1st was for a xmas night out a few years back and we all stayed over, it was very good. I am just back from a family wedding here. The staff were very efficient and friendly, food good & service excellent, we all had a great time
I only gave 4* for location but that was only because i felt you would need your car to get there, the hotel,s location is in excellent surroundings and very tranquil especially out the back beside the woods and old mill.

Overall would recommend an overnight stay.

We chose this hotel from quite a few in Scotland through a Fresh Weekends Gift Experience. Very pleased with the choice. The room was basic but very comfortable. Hotel and grounds were lovely. We ate the bar food both nights which we enjoyed. Nice relaxing atmosphere in the evening, the Saturday night there was a wedding on. Staff very helpful so really enjoyed the stay and would go again.

This was a 2-night B&B stay with dinner on the first night as part of a Travelzoo deal. The other parts of the deal (lunch in Edinburgh and free tickets for Royal Yacht Brittania were never offered to us).
The drive up to the hotel is stunning and the grounds delightful, especially at this time of year - autumn. This was the favourite part of our trip.
Our room was on the second floor; it was comfortable and clean and we had a great Nespresso coffee machine, which was a bonus! The bed gave average sleep quality but I suspect that was because the room was very warm.
Dinner in the restaurant on the first night was fine and the staff did their very best, but there weren't enough of them.
Breakfasts were served between 7.30 and 9.30am. They were chaotic and definitely the low point for us - both of them. We arrived at 9.00am and it was difficult to seat us on both mornings due to the tables being full of dirty dishes, which was off-putting. Again, staff were doing their very best but there were only two of them! The tables were still stacked with dirty dishes when we left half an hour later.
I firmly believe that staff training in the restaurant is an issue that the management of the hotel needs to address. During our stay: wine was poured into a glass part-filled with water and pots of tea were served when coffee was requested - on two occasions.
The staff, generally, could not do enough for the guests and were welcoming. The concierge, Colin, needs a special mention.
The pool was fine and we had been pre-warned that we needed to let the reception know if we wanted to use the sauna, which we did. The sauna never got really hot.
All in all, our stay did not meet with our expectations, after reading the reviews and we were disappointed. I will mention the Horseshoe Inn here, where we had an amazing meal with impeccable service. Maybe the Barony Castle could learn a lesson from them?

Went to this hotel for my birthday. Weather was crap, welcome was warm. Loved the uneven corridors, they made me feel tipsy when completely sober! The room was typical hotel room with everything you would expect. We went for a short wander around the grounds and agreed that we would go back in summer to experience all the nature that was around.

We had intended to chill out in the spa, but there were lots of kids around so we didn't do that. Probably best to avoid school hols if you want to chill in the pool.

The bar area was great. Comfy sofas. So comfy I needed help getting up from them. Bar prices are what you expect from a hotel of this standard and we weren't too shocked by them.

Our evening meal was exceptional. It was £22 for two courses, which were enough to fill you up. Wine prices were what you expect from a hotel so I have no gripes about that.

Obviously there was no smoking throughout the hotel but they were thoughtful enough to provide umbrellas so you could indulge in your vice without getting soaking wet in the Scottish weather.

On our way out a raptor of some sort flew down the road almost in the same direction as we were driving. Don't know what it was but it was spectacular

I have one gripe. The hairdryer was fixed inside the dressing table drawer and the cord was short. This meant that you couldn't dry your hair whilst looking in the mirror. Blow, look, blow, look. It was really annoying. Nevertheless, a good experience which will be repeated.

Room Tip: Our room was overlooking the front of the hotel but there were no noise problems.

Stayed in this hotel as part of a Travelzoo deal,which turned out to be excellent value.Very friendly staff,clean but basic rooms,a refurb is definately required.Lovely pool,poor cold sauna.
Evening meal was lovely and breakfast good,though some of food on buffet could be hotter.
Sadly bar staff very pleasant,bu clueless at making drinks such as plain old gin and tonic.
The grounds are delightful and lovely to walk around

As we have recently been taken over, the building is currently going through a staged refurbishment. I’m sorry that you found the sauna to be cool, as part of our environmental responsibility policy the sauna works on a timer. We do have signs in place to ask our guests to alert us when they would like the sauna to be on. Following your review I have had these signs relocated to ensure that our guests are aware of this procedure.
