It's 18 miles from Edinburgh and there is a regular Peebles 62 First Bus at the bottom of the road, although that's about a ten minute walk to the hotel from the bus stop.. So we hired a car. Directions from Edinburgh for the hotel are clear with plenty of signs. No signs from the south (Peebles), so be prepared!
Hotel Reception were friendly and reliable.
The room was clean and comfortable. Creaking floors but that's always the case in a classic old building. The bed was firm.
Disappointing not to receive Sky News on the bedroom TV. Digital TV in some parts is lacking.
The swimming pool in the GYM was easy to find and use. You need to know the door code, but it's straightforward. The pool is a little small, especially when there were six people in it. The jacuzzi is fun, and the sauna is a little intimate.
Breakfast was excellent, although I forgot to take advantage of porridge. You have to order porridge because "it doesn't sit well for long periods"
Restaurant evening meal was good, although the wine was pricey! On the second night we chose a bar snack and that was the normal DeVere type standard.
If you are looking for a quiet getaway then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: The lift is a bit jumpy, so if you don't like lifts, request a low floor.

We have just returned from a two night break at the Barony Castle. The first thing to say is that we only paid £19 per night for the room through a De Vere special offer, so we decided that even if it wasn't great it wouldn't matter that much. How wrong we were! It was fabulous! We loved everything from the room, to the bar, to the customer service, to the food in the restaurant, to the pool and to the beautiful grounds.
Breakfast was excellent and, at £10.50 each quite reasonable. We ate in the restaurant on the second night and enjoyed our meals greatly. The two people that attended to us that night could not have been more helpful. Our room was lovely with a great view.
We often say that we will return to hotels but we never get round to it. We will, however, certainly return to the Barony Castle for another relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable break.

We booked to stay for one night over the bank holiday weekend because we did that last year and loved it. When we arrived we were informed that the hotel was overbooked ( not our fault !) so a room in the nearby Horseshoe Inn had been reserved on our behalf , we were actually told that we were "lucky" because there was a festival on and everywhere else was fully booked. We realise these situation do happen and had no real choice but to graciously accept the situation. When we tried to book our evening meal the receptionist said we could not be seated until 8.30 and we should eat at the Horseshoe Inn as their food was of such a high standard the Barony Castle could not compete with them !! Perhaps, in hindsight, alarm bells should have gone off then but having eaten at Barony before we thought we would book to eat again. Big mistake. We were eventually shown to a table after an embarressing long stand, looking like lost souls and being completely ignored by three different members of staff. It took a further 20 minutes and 4 requests to have a jug of water brought to the table and a further request to have someone take our food order.A full forty minutes later our starters were served, luke warm soup for my wife and a passable cheese rosti for me . The mains eventually arrived, please don't waste your money on the beef wellington, a lump of grey meat encased in burnt pastry served with watery mashed potato and tasteless gravy, my wife tried but could not eat it . My dish was no better , a tasteless rubbery chicken with equally tasteless vegetables and gravy. I however had no choice but to eat as much as a could as I am diabetic and needed to eat. It is fair to say the dining room was busy but there did appear to be ample staff and as not much food was being served they could have made an effort to clear the tables of dishes and empty glasses. There didn't seem to be anyone taking charge and when we spoke to the duty manager , as sorry as he said he was, he did not offer us another chance to eat . Given the rural location of where we actually were , where were we supposed to get something to eat at 9.45pm on a bank holiday sunday ? Answer is we didn't ,we had coffee and ginger cake that was in our room in the Horseshoe Inn. Apparently Barony is no longer a De vere hotel so perhaps there are changes ahead, I hope our experience was a glitch as it is a lovely place to come when they get it right.

Just returned from a family break at Barony Castle.
What an absolute delight it was. All the staff were exceptional, nothing was ever too much trouble - I made sure the manager was aware as I left but I'm sure he already knows how great they are!
We dined on both nights, the food was great for both dinner and breakfast.
Look forward to returning!!

It was quite hard to find if travelling from the Peebles direction as no sign on the main road however when we did get there it was a lovely surprise i would say a grand house more than your typical castle. But still stunning and has large grounds. The reception area was stylish and modern as was the bar/restaurant. However we were very disappointed with our room on the 1st floor above the kitchen the room looked very dated and lacked any character at all looked like your average travelodge. We asked to move and the staff were very accomodating and we move the next day to a room on the 2nd floor this had a much nicer view but still looked dated and worn. We had a lovely time in Peebles which is beautiful I just think this hotel could be amazing with a refurb.
