“very good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2010

Although this is a budget hotel, it is ideal for a short break , located close to the A2 turning for Canterbury. The bed was very comfortable, and although the lack of storage space and a bath would be a problem on a longer stay, the room was perfectly adequate for a couple of nights.

The staff, particularly Melwyn, were very helpful and the dinner provided was of a surprisingly high standard for a hotel at the cheaper end of the scale. Definitely recommended.

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel at the bargain price of £27.50 per night.

The hotel is a typical Holiday Inn on a very busy A road however I did ask for a quiet room and that was what i got at the back of the hotel and I didn't hear any traffic noise at all. it is a little difficult to find if you don't do your research and if coming from Canterbury you do have to go a mile or so out of your way to come back down the otherde of the dual carriageway.

Location wise it's about 4 miles from Canterbury centre. We got taxis at night (Fab Cabs - they have a special deal with the hotel) which cost £7.50 before 11pm and £11.50 after. One night that we were out we did go to the queue of taxis in the centre but they wanted £20 to take us to the hotel at 11:05pm so your best booking a return with Fab Cabs.

The room was very comfortable with all the usual stuff, very clean and great shower. Continental breakfast was included and was fine.

The bar in the hotel is not great, no atmosphere and never anyone in there. We did buy a few drinks but just took them to our room instead.

One thing that did surprise me was how many students there were in the city, 40,000 according to our taxi driver. Well lets just say that the town was heaving with drunken 18-25 year olds everywhere you went and you just couldn't get away from the constant screaming that seem to come from the girls. if your over the age of 30 I would suggest coming in the school holidays :-)

Visited the Cathedral and Canterbury Tales both were very good.

Tip - Visit the Cathedral first as they hand out vouchers for 50% off the Canterbury Tales admission price.

Stayed two nights here whilst visiting Canterbury (about a 10 min drive away). First of all, would say the place was clean, the staff pleasant and the room comfortable. The breakfast was, as all HIEs, wholesome but hardly memorable.
The down-side was the noise from the traffic. If some cases the rooms are literally yards from the main road which carries, all hours of the day and night, trucks and lorries to the ports of Kent. Maybe there are some rooms where you can't hear these; there are rooms which face away from the road. If you are in rooms on any of the 3 sides which face the road expect varying degrees of road noise at all times.

We were visiting family in the area and booked a last minute room at the Express by Holiday Inn. Driving north from Dover direction in the dark we saw the hotel sign but think we would have had difficulty locating the entrance if it was not for our families detailed directions. We were a little concerned when we realised how close it was to the A2 and a petrol station but, even though we arrived at 9pm, we were given a quiet room as requested. The room was a typical Holiday Inn Express room - not a great deal of storage but perfectly adequate for a short stay. The bathroom was spotlessly clean with a good shower. Other people had mentioned the mattress but ours was perfect - neither too soft or too hard with a good choice of soft or firm pillows. The room was so quiet we had one of our best night's sleep for sometime and just managed to get up on time for breakfast. The free breakfast was the continental type but still plenty of choice even though we arrived late. All the staff we met were very friendly.
Will definitely stay there again next time we are in the area.

We choose Holiday Inn Express hotels to get a basic, dependable level of service. On our first morning at Holiday Inn Express Canterbury, breakfast service was not good. I passed comment about this at Reception: I got an immediate apology and an assurance that everything would be put right the following morning. The following morning - everything was perfect! When you pay Holiday Inn Express prices, you can't expect The Ritz, but I was impressed to find that, when things go wrong, staff really do keep their promises. We'll keep coming back to the Holiday Inn Express brand.

This is a basic holiday inn express, with the same food, bathroom, and rooms as I've seen elsewhere. It is not close to city center, but is convenient to the highway. The rooms are clean and recently re-modeled and looked fresh and clean.

My two major complaints were the staff and the mattresses. The staff were rude and unhelpful. We specifically asked for a room facing the trees (not the highway) and upon check-in, were assured that this was the case. In arriving in our room, we were dismayed to find out that our room not only faced the highway, but was directly over the entrance, which meant that when we opened our window to get fresh air, we could only get cigarette smoke and the highway sound all evening.

The mattresses are just mediocre - nothing awful, but certainly not great.

Stayed here for one night late in July 2009 whist touring round the area.
Before arriving I was a little concerned about the location (next to a filling station on a main road), but it turned out that I had no reason to worry. It was set back from the road and I noticed no road noise what so ever from my room. Easy access to Canterbury, Whitstable etc.
Check in was very quick and efficient, all staff seemed to be friendly and helpful.
The hotel was clean and accommodation was standard Holiday Inn Express type.
Didn’t eat in hotel in the evening, but I think the menu was less than extensive. Breakfast was normal HIE continental breakfast.
The bar/lounge area seemed to lack a bit of charm - I know that most HIE’s are similar in nature but this one seemed to be just a bit soulless - had to sit at one of the dining tables as not many lounge chairs/tables around.
Only real complaint was the bed - it seemed to be far too soft for our liking. My wife complained of feeling sea sick the next morning as apparently every time I moved during the night the bed wobbled uncontrollably
Mobile phone reception was very poor - on two different networks - had to go outside to get a signal.
The nightly rate displayed in reception seemed to be about double the cost I paid by prebooking on-line. The cost I paid I consider to be very reasonable for the standard, however I would consider the displayed rate to be far too much.
