“Climbing on ancient paths”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2014

It was a sunny, brisk day in early April when my husband and I hiked up Helgafell. It's a nice little scramble, not for tots but older kids and teens would enjoy it. The history of the place is touching and kind of sweet. I climbed not to wish but to pray briefly for three friends who are struggling with overwhelming things and it was comforting to know so many had sought grace there before me. Whether you go as a lark or with a weary heart, the view is lovely and peaceful.

There is a toilet, but it was locked up tight. We were not there in tourist season.

“Beautiful views from the top”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2014 via mobile

Climbed this hill with one of the farmers dogs who insisted in coming with us! Fab views from the top and don't forget to make your 3 wishes :). It is difficult coming down!

“Must climb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

Sacred to Óðinn. We climbed it on our way out of Stykkishólmur in January of '14. Great views of Stykkishólmur and the Breiðafjord. The whole hill was covered with a sheet of ice, so what apperared from the bottom to be a simple 74-meter scramble turned into quite an adventure coming down!
As everyone will tell you, when you ascend, no talking, don't look back, and at the summit walk around the chapel ruins three times clockwise and make a silent wish. In winter, you better wish to get back down safely!

“Whoops...start at the church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013 via mobile

We drove up to the small parking lot with the information sign and started our walk from there. It wasn't until we reached the top of the hill and looked down the other side that we saw the little church and the grave, where you're supposed to start the walk if you want to make your three wishes. So, when you drive up and see the big info sign, keep going down the road and park by the church.

Even though we did it "wrong," the views were absolutely stunning. Fjords and peaks as far as you can see. I highly recommend this little hike.

“Saga pilgrimage-site”

Essential for anyone fascinated by Laxdaela Saga. Clean public toilets by the car park. No other facilities (why would there be?) but a box on the fence net to Gudrun's grave allows you to address a postcard to yourself certifying that you've climbed the hill - this will later be posted to you by the resident farmer.
We borrowed bicycles from Hotel Egilsen in Stykkisholmur and cycled there - an easy 30-minute ride on well-made, largely empty roads through stunning scenery.
