Description: Narfeyrarstofa restaurant and café is the oldest operating restaurant in Stykkishólmur. It’s a family business and is open all year round. Narfeyrarstofa’s menu features inventive dishes served artfully in the beautiful surroundings of the restaurant, where utterly charming views from the premises bring life to the atmosphere. There is a strong emphasis on creativity in the kitchen, and it is safe to say that craftsmanship is held in high regard, as the ingredients are of the finest quality and sourced locally wherever possible. Narfeyrarstofa’s chefs prepare all ingredients from scratch, and the kitchen makes use of a powerful meat processor as local meat is prepared in different ways for the various dishes on the menu. From the restaurant there are views over Breiðafjörður bay’s “natural pantry”. Ingredients from there are on the table every day, exceptionally fresh. Blue mussels from Breiðafjörður are always on offer when in season. The menu also has a selection of hamburgers, proclaimed to be “the real deal”, “juicy” and “even better than búllaburgers” by our guests, who come back for them again and again! Our wine menu is unusually diverse and features specially selected wines of various types. The restaurant is in a two-storey house built in 1906 in the heart of Stykkishólmur, by the old church that towers over Aðalgata. There is room for 70 people indoors, and it’s also possible to sit outside when the weather’s nice. The atmosphere at Narfeyrarstofa is warm and welcoming, and the staff and the owners do everything they can to provide outstanding service to their guests.

I feel really torn in this review, as the food was absolutely delicious, and came in massive portions (I had the trout, which was as big as a fish we'd usually prepare for two!), but the service was a joke.

There were about 4 tables of customers, and as many waiters, but it took us 75 minutes to get through one course. They took an age taking our order, the food itself didn't take long to come, but once it had been brought to the table we never saw our waiter again. Literally. He didn't even pop back to see whether the food was ok or if we wanted drinks. 20-30 minutes after we'd both clearly finished our mains we gave up, having grown bored of looking at cold leftover fish so we found someone to pay, then went to another restaurant for dessert!

I appreciate that our waiter may have gone for a break, but other staff were walking by us and despite attempts at getting their attention they didn't want to know. It's such a shame as this restaurant would have scored top marks otherwise.

I have NEVER left a restaurant mid-meal before.

The location is great - right in the harbour, the dining room is nice (Pub style). The the seafood soup was actually quite good as a starter - as mentioned in earlier reviews. The burgers were acceptable even if blue cheese and cocktail sauce on most of the burgers are not everyone's taste. The negative surprise was the desert - the vanilla ice cream was stone hard with only a distant taste of vanilla, the chocolate mousse tasted boring and the fruits on top were taken from a can.

The lobster was absolutely amazing, and all other fresh seafood was really fantastic. Service was good and the building is soooo charming!

After a very long day of driving and touring, we finally arrived in Stykkisholmur (a word I love to say) at the dinner hour. The guidebook warned that Narfeyrarstofa might be overrun with tour bussers but we were lucky and were seated right away. It is a charming restaurant, and like everywhere we went in Iceland, the people were lovely and the fish was fresh. We both ordered mussels that came with salad and fries. The mussels were huge and plentiful, so much so, that I was unable to finish them off -- something that rarely happens. Other diners' food also looked good.

What a great surprise this was, after a long day driving slowly from Reykjavik to Stykkisholmur. We first looked at the beautiful view outside, at the lighthouse. Than afterwards we entered this place. Since it was in the winter, there weren't a lot of people. So we had a table very easily. Little did we know that this was going to be a great dinner. My girlfriend took the lamb and i had the monkfish. Both meals were served in a creative way and the portion was good. The waitress was very friendly. This place was recommended to us by our host of the guesthouse. I am happy that we listened to him.
