We really liked our stop here. Although one of us is an experienced glacier traveler, having spent weeks on them during climbs of big mountains, we both had a great time here. The walk from the parking lot to the face of the glacier, perhaps ¾ of a mile, is beautiful. Lush green slopes, rocky cliffs, bright white ice, black as midnight lava. Once at the glacier front, plenty of scenic photography opportunities presented themselves. The contrast between the white ice and the layer of black lave gravel was dramatic. We observed quite a number of groups receiving basic lessons in glacier travel; ice axe, crampons, climbing harness, helmets.

Make sure you walk with crampons to trek onto the glaciers. very scenic hike from the parking lot to the glaciers. Don't forget to have a drink of that pristine glacier water :)
Enjoy the views from the top!

We visit Sólheimajökull glacier every time we visit Iceland. On our first visit the road to there (221) was an awful gravel road, full of potholes, but there was a glacier a few minutes walk from the end! Now the road is glorious, although the parking lot is full of sharp rocks, and the glacier is nearly 20 minutes walk from the lot as it is receding faster than my hairline!

You can easily walk to the glacier and take pictures with it. Don't climb without a guide as it has fractures and crevasses and is slippery!

A short walk from the parking takes you to the glacier. It is quite an experience being so close to it. When we went, ice had a covering of soil/mud for some reason and gave it a 'dirty' appearance but you can see ice shining beneath the surface.
There is a lake with floating icebergs. You could book to go on a guided walk on the glacier as well. We didn't as it wasn't suitable for our kids (aged 4 and 7).
It has free parking and paid restrooms.

If you've seen glaciers elsewhere, this one is not too different. It's a relatively easy walk and worth an hour to get some exercise.
