“Beware of building site”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

The hotel is still being built! There was a tower crane next to reception. However, it did not bother us as we were given a room on the ground floor facing the main road. The room included breakfast which was buffet style. Good seafood and breads. The hotel is very conveniently located on the ring road and is within walking distance of the sea and black sand beach. Bathroom was tiny and anyone taller than 6ft will have a problem. Room was clean and comfortable. No noise from the main road which is a some 200m away. A cafe and restaurant plus good souvenir shop located by the main road and therefore within walking distance.

Room Tip: Make sure that your room does not face the tower crane and building site!

I booked in May for July and this hotel was the only one in the south with rooms available. Thanks to the extension very recently built, it now has an increased capacity. We had a room on the second floor in the corner overlooking the beach and the hill, a superb view through large glass panels, everything was new, quite modern and perfectly operational. Some parts of this building were not yet decorated.

We spent a night in one of the hotel’s summer cottages in June and found it to be much better than we’d expected from pictures and reviews. We were in the end one, well away from the construction palaver going on at the main hotel building, and had a view towards the sea as well as a small verandah from which to enjoy said view. As others have said, the cottages are divided into two rooms, which share a small entrance hall but have their own bathroom facilities. We paid 13,200ISK for ours without breakfast (we were carrying our own provisions, so this was not a problem) and thought it a good deal for the area.

The cottage itself was light, airy and spotlessly clean with high ceilings and a comfy bed. It was simple but felt nicer than it looks in pictures! The bathroom was compact but perfectly manageable, there was a kettle for making tea and coffee and the television picked up various English stations. The heater worked quickly and efficiently. We used the free wifi access in the hotel lobby and also took advantage of the discount offered at the restaurant behind the roadhouse opposite. Nothing much to complain about, really!

The only thing that I would mention is that noise insulation is not the best. As 11pm rolled around, we thought that we’d hit the jackpot with no neighbours in the adjoining room – but were woken at 1am by guests arriving, chatting and banging doors as they lugged their bags about and so forth. In all fairness, they probably didn’t realise how loud it sounded and, to be honest, I’m surprised that we could hear anything over the din of the howling gale which buffeted the cottage all night… Our neighbours probably weren’t all that keen on our 7am departure, either, although we tried to be as quiet as possible.

That said, we enjoyed our brief stay in the little summer cottage. It was much cheaper than the hotel itself and we thought that the cottage seemed far more appealing than the main building. I would quite happily recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Ask for the cottage at the end, as far from the hotel as possible - it feels more private and is a l...

Although I booked in March for end June, Hotel Edda was the only one in and around Vik that could take six of us. For €159 you get a clean, comfortable room with attached bathroom and flat screen TV, tea-tray, and a view of the seafront. WiFi only reaches about halfway along the corridor and we were at the end. The decent buffet breakfast was another €11 per head. Service is friendly and efficient.

They are putting the money back into the hotel by adding rooms. Vik is well worth a stay and needs the capacity.

The hotel is OK. We had a room apart from the main building. There is hardly any isolation for noise and rumours between the rooms.
The hotwater is limited.
There is only a breakfast in the main building. The breakfast is OK, but the long tables have to be shared with other guests, there is no chance to sit privately.
WIFI is included but only available ih the lobby.
Price is rather high, but this seems to be the case for most hotels in Iceland.

We had a July fly drive trip around Iceland's ring road. We arrived at 2.30pm at this hotel, from an early flight into Iceland. The cabin we booked was advertised as available at 2pm. We found we had been moved to a hotel room and the room was not ready - we were asked to come back in 30 minutes. We left it over an hour before we returned but the room was still not ready. We finally got a room at 4pm.
The room was ok with a nice modern bathroom and a comfortable bed - however there were builders outside our room until 8pm, and they started next morning at 7am. There was no warning about this, or any apology.
The room lacked attention to detail. The bedside lamps were so dim we could not read in bed, there was no soap and only one (herbal) teabag provided.
I generally felt service was a little disinterested.
The hotel did seem high priced for the overall package provided to us. I suspect it would seem better value at off season rates.

Hotel Edda at Vik was nothing special to write home about. I had a simple room with a depressing back view on to extensions being done to the hotel. The hotel is on the ring road and easy to find. The hotel has a deal with the roadhouse across the road, for dinner, and i had a fairly uninspiring meal. Slow internet is free in the lobby but inaccessible in the room. On the plus side, breakfast was fantastic,
for 1560 ISK, and was the full Scandinavian spread. Next time around I would choose a guesthouse instead of a fairly lifeless hotel. Vik is a lovely town and easy to walk around
