Arrived at Hotel Hofdabrekka in Vik about 4:30 p.m. (check in time is 4 p.m.). The parking lot was empty of cars. My wife went into the hotel to check us in, while I unloaded our luggage. In her hand she carried our reservation confirmation letters (we reserved a room in September 2012 for our June 2013 stay). Upon entering the lobby, my wife was met by a young man at the desk. She gave him her name and showed our reservation papers. The young man said, "there's been a mistake, we're overbooked and we don't have a room for you but we've made you a reservation at Hotel Dyrholaey about 15 minutes away. Will that be O.K.? My wife said, "let me get my husband." When I went to the front desk, the young man repeated the same story to me. I told the young man that I reserved a room in September and that I wanted to speak to the owner. The owner came out of the back room and repeated the same story and said he would give us a free dinner if we went to the other hotel because they were overbooked. I told the owner that this was not o.k. and that I wanted my reserved room and had I wanted to stay at Hotel Dyrholaey, that I would have made a reservation there. I mentioned to the owner that I write reviews for the TripAdvisor and all of a sudden his tune changed. All of a sudden, they had a room for my wife and I. Imagine that!! What a way to be greeted when you've traveled a long way in a foreign country. What good is a reservation system if it is not honored. This hotel needs to change their policy in regards to overbooking rooms and then putting pressure on their guests to move from the top-rated hotel in Vik to the 4th rated hotel in Vik (4th rated out of 5 listed). Shortly after we checked in, several tour buses arrived and then I understood the real reason why they said they were overbooked. Now the good. Our room was large, spacious and clean. The people who worked in the restaurant were both pleasant and helpful. The food offered on the dinner and breakfast buffets were both varied and delicious. It's a shame that we couldn't have received a more welcoming greeting and both my wife and I were upset with this treatment.
