“Beware!!! Be careful with this place!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

Arrived at Hotel Hofdabrekka in Vik about 4:30 p.m. (check in time is 4 p.m.). The parking lot was empty of cars. My wife went into the hotel to check us in, while I unloaded our luggage. In her hand she carried our reservation confirmation letters (we reserved a room in September 2012 for our June 2013 stay). Upon entering the lobby, my wife was met by a young man at the desk. She gave him her name and showed our reservation papers. The young man said, "there's been a mistake, we're overbooked and we don't have a room for you but we've made you a reservation at Hotel Dyrholaey about 15 minutes away. Will that be O.K.? My wife said, "let me get my husband." When I went to the front desk, the young man repeated the same story to me. I told the young man that I reserved a room in September and that I wanted to speak to the owner. The owner came out of the back room and repeated the same story and said he would give us a free dinner if we went to the other hotel because they were overbooked. I told the owner that this was not o.k. and that I wanted my reserved room and had I wanted to stay at Hotel Dyrholaey, that I would have made a reservation there. I mentioned to the owner that I write reviews for the TripAdvisor and all of a sudden his tune changed. All of a sudden, they had a room for my wife and I. Imagine that!! What a way to be greeted when you've traveled a long way in a foreign country. What good is a reservation system if it is not honored. This hotel needs to change their policy in regards to overbooking rooms and then putting pressure on their guests to move from the top-rated hotel in Vik to the 4th rated hotel in Vik (4th rated out of 5 listed). Shortly after we checked in, several tour buses arrived and then I understood the real reason why they said they were overbooked. Now the good. Our room was large, spacious and clean. The people who worked in the restaurant were both pleasant and helpful. The food offered on the dinner and breakfast buffets were both varied and delicious. It's a shame that we couldn't have received a more welcoming greeting and both my wife and I were upset with this treatment.

Our room was large as was the bathroom. It was clean and comfortable and we had a good night's rest. Breakfast buffet was good although the staff were not very friendly. The lady when we checked in was however very helpful.

Room Tip: All rooms looked OK. Some may have better views than others.

Big, clean rooms with lovely bathroom. Good place for an overnight stopover when driving along the route 1. Not too much to see in Vik other than the beach and rocky stacks and arch and it was raining hard during our stay so there was little else to do but the hotel allowed us to check in early so we could get out of the rain. Breakfast was ok but less variety than other hotels we experienced during our stay in Iceland.

One story buildings, clean rooms, helpful staff. Restaurant was low average as to choices and food was average..ran out if you were late eaters. Really just a good place for a sleepover as nothing to see in the immediate area.

This is our second stay at Hotel Hofdabrekka, and usually our first stop in Iceland as we circumnavigate the ring road counterclockwise around Iceland after landing at Keflavik.
We chose to come back here because of several things:

1. Location was excellent as Vik is a must see destination in Iceland.
2. Affordability is good, good value for the money.
3. Large comfortable, clean, cozy warm rooms finished in knotty pine.
4. Relaxing laid back atmosphere, good beds and clean washrooms.
5. Great buffet breakfast to charge you up on before heading out on a day's adventure.
6. Distant views of the Vik's famous rock promontories, known as Reynisdrangar
7. Vik is very quaint, with several good restaurants and an interesting wool factory, as well as great natural views and a quaint church. Vik is also a stepping off point for some adventure tours.
8. Friendly, courteous, efficient staff.

Here's a few things to be aware of though:

1. This is a stop off hotel for tour buses, which means there can be large groups at the breakfast buffet. Breakfast starts at 7 am, be there at 655 am for best seating and food selection and availability.
2. Fairly large hotel by Icelandic standards and is about 5 kms from the quaint town of Vik, so once you at the Hotel Hofdabrekka there is not a town or village to walk thru, unless you drive back to Vik.
3. Eating is expensive in Iceland, this hotel offers a breakfast buffet included in the price, which adds great value, to buy the breakfast elsewhere might be about $25 US per person, so take advantage of the value. (Dinner the night before at the Hotel Lundi was about $100 US without drinks). But get to the buffet early before the tour bus groups swarm the tables!

So the overview of the Hotel Hofdabrekka is, good value, comfortable, and well located.
There are a few limitations,
Probably 3 star quality, and a great way-point on the road around Iceland. Would stay again.

Room Tip: Get to the Breakfast Buffet early!

The hotel is a great overnight location or two nights if necessary. The rooms were clean and well kept. As previous reviewers have stated, it seems to be a key stopping point for some tour groups. They end up being a captive audience and have to suffer with the high price of food and the lack of selection at the hotel restaurant. If you are staying here, only do so if you have your own transportation. You should skip the hotel restaurant and go for food in Vik only 5km away. You will be able to eat better food for half the price.

Basically, we would recommend the hotel, but only if you have your own transportation.

We stayed one night at the hotel during our Iceland tour. It is very simple but cozy, clean and peaceful hotel on the mainroad nro 1, only 4 km east from Vik. The room had not fridge which was a little disappointment. The breakfast was best we ate in Iceland. The dinner costed too much so we ate dinner in the centre of very tiny Vik.
However it is good hotel for a short stay with reasonable price.
