Just a short walk from the car park in the middle of the village you can walk along the pristine black beach. The sculpture to commemorate Vik's association with Hull (UK) points the way. The church above the village is very picturesque as are the little houses on the side of the hill. We lunch in the little cafe near the car park, the lamb steaks were very good, and compared to the cost of eating out elsewhere in Iceland it was reasonably priced.

Whilst staying at Vik we visited this great beach. It was sleety and windy but did not diminish the experience of seeing some great basalt columns. Although there were a couple of English school trips they were busy being blown about too and were equally fascinated by the mystery of the black volcanic sand.

The rock pillars formation near the beach is a must see in Iceland. Next to the rock formation, we also saw a large "cave", which is actually not a real cave, just a perceptive illusion if you view the formation from side. The whole beach area is filled not with sand, but black pebbles. These black pebbles are round and smooth. All these spectacular sceneries plus the ferocious waves from the sea make Black Sand Beach an out of the Earth experience for us.

This is a weird place. The sand is black, for starters. The hexagonal shaped basalt columns are strange. There are little caves to hide in that are often hidden.
It is a strange and beautiful place.
The sand is difficult to walk on but is stunningly black.
The sea is crisp and clear and moves in quickly.
I was lucky enough to see the sunset over the sea, next to the nearby stacks in the ocean, which was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever witnessed.
The basalt columns are interesting (the formation, again, is very odd) and are perfect for photos opportunities!
Really beautiful place and would definitely visit again.

Th beach is a beautiful place to visit especially when it's sunny (it was for me) and the sand is black due to being a fine basalt which looks really cool since beaches are normally cream/white. The ocean is beautiful and very clear, you just want to dive in but it's really cold :P There are some very cool columnar joints from lava that's cooled making hexagonal shaped columns joined together going really high up. There is also an arch and cave along the shore you can take pictures of and the cliff above the beach is amazing to stand on and take pictures of the beach with.
