“Puffins on a nice day in August”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

We were lucky, we were able to see puffins in August. The beach is so strange, where the water is so blue, the rocks and sand are so black it's incredible!

Don't bother buying lave rocks in the souvenir shops, you can collect as many for free from here.

Another must see in Iceland!

“Very interesting”

Well worth the drive down to the beach. It was so different to any where else we had been. The cave if you can get to it shows remarkable geology.

“Peaceful and Pleasant”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

Iceland is not known for its beaches, but the volcanic sand here against the wild ocean offers incredible views not found anywhere else. It is a long trip from Reykjavik, but well worth it to walk along the black sand and watch the ocean waves.

“Fun to be here”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Don't miss this! Worth the drive from the main ring road. This beach with the basalt cliffs is something so different. To see the basalt 'organ pipes' is beautiful, and to know that it is these basalt formations (that are seen in other places in Iceland too) are the inspiration for the architecture of the magnificent church in Reykjavic. I love being here. There's also a good view of the Reynisdrangar (I think?...Dragons teeth) rocks from here too. The black beach here is black pebbles and rough, but beautiful. After this, drive to Vik, and do the short walk to the beach from the fuel station and shops, and here see the fine sand black beaches that are so perfect, like black velvet, and you can walk for miles!! Just a beautiful beautiful area!

“The Edge of Timelessness”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

You and the Magnificence of Nature. As you stand along this black ribbon of beauty you feel so small against the vastness and endless power of an ocean that stretches out in front of you all the way to Antarctica. Massive waves crashing, spray whipped by the wind in swirls all around, monolithic rock shapes, cliffs rising vertically behind you. You are trapped by the beauty and trapped by the power the sea and the land and you. It's all so mystical, and magical, there seem to be spirits and powers all around you, you are made small and your realize how beautiful this place, how it has stood here like this over so many ages, just like it is today. Timeless, and you are right there in this timelessness, it is completely captivating and wonderful.
