“Fun to be here”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Don't miss this! Worth the drive from the main ring road. This beach with the basalt cliffs is something so different. To see the basalt 'organ pipes' is beautiful, and to know that it is these basalt formations (that are seen in other places in Iceland too) are the inspiration for the architecture of the magnificent church in Reykjavic. I love being here. There's also a good view of the Reynisdrangar (I think?...Dragons teeth) rocks from here too. The black beach here is black pebbles and rough, but beautiful. After this, drive to Vik, and do the short walk to the beach from the fuel station and shops, and here see the fine sand black beaches that are so perfect, like black velvet, and you can walk for miles!! Just a beautiful beautiful area!

“The Edge of Timelessness”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

You and the Magnificence of Nature. As you stand along this black ribbon of beauty you feel so small against the vastness and endless power of an ocean that stretches out in front of you all the way to Antarctica. Massive waves crashing, spray whipped by the wind in swirls all around, monolithic rock shapes, cliffs rising vertically behind you. You are trapped by the beauty and trapped by the power the sea and the land and you. It's all so mystical, and magical, there seem to be spirits and powers all around you, you are made small and your realize how beautiful this place, how it has stood here like this over so many ages, just like it is today. Timeless, and you are right there in this timelessness, it is completely captivating and wonderful.

“Just like the postcards!”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

I had seen pictures of this beach and couldn't visit Iceland without seeing it! Despite a long drive and a little trouble finding it (stop at the very friendly Visitors' Center in "downtown" Vik and get a map and directions if you have time, but it's basically the turn BEFORE the big headland and the road down into Vik if you're coming from Reykjavik). I wasn't disappointed! The beach is beautiful, the basalt cliffs just like the pictures, and the sound of the water hitting the rocks on the beach is magical. All that, and lots of birds too! I was traveling with my mobility-limited mother who couldn't make it as far as the cliffs but the views even from the parking lot are spectacular. One tip: make sure you visit the arched rock at the other end of the beach (accessible down another road just a few miles up from where you turn in for this one), really the bookends of a magnificent spot!

“Unbelievable amazing!”

I am so glad I got to see this beautiful beach! My friends and family can't believe my pictures. Even on a cloudy day it was beautiful and worth the visit. It was also our fist view of the Puffins!

“Unique and beautiful”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Don't miss the lava sand beaches near the quaint little town Vik in south Iceland. Getting there is easy, a short walk leads you there, and the views are extraordinary: The beach itself, with its dark black lava sand, never saw such deep black sands, the tall basalt cliffs with the honeycomb-like columns, and the two big rocks emerging from the sea near the beach. Tips: (A) bring warm clothes, especially in winter. (B) Wear good hiking boots if you intend to climb the columns, even by little. (C) Carefully read the plaques posted there, for an important piece of information.
