“Black Sand Beach”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

10 mins drive from Vik Youth Hostel. Unusual, amazing, close to the spectacular rocks, with basalt columns in rockside. Watch out for the tide rushing up the beach. Low tide - you can walk round the coast further and get better photos.

“The ultimate Icelandic wedding”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

The beach is beyond your wildest dreams. In rain, snow, sun and darkness it is absolutely breathtaking. You must visit if you are in Iceland. Well worth the drive.

“stunning in so many ways”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

This place is stunning in so many ways - dark grey sand with interesting rocks, unique basalt columns intertwined into the cliffs, dramatic hillsides, and majestic seastacks. and the vegetation is sooo green! such a great contrast to the black sand beach.

Loved walking around this place. There were not that many people around when I was there- it was really peaceful and relaxing.

“Must See for Any South Coast Trip”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

Its a quick drive down the road from Rte 1, a short walk from the parking lot to the beach, and totally worth it. Even if you just spend a few minutes walking on the black sand and looking at the sea stacks and sea arches, they're the kind of things that make Iceland so wondrous. Take a seat on the basalt pyramid and imagine the trolls the sea stacks used to be, before they were caught in sunlight and turned to stone. If you're staying in Vik (in fall spring or winter) I highly recommend coming here around sunrise, its spectacular.

“dramatic geography”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

The sea is so strong and cold, the hexagonal rock structure like the Giant's Causeway, beautiful black pebbly beach and surprising large waves every so often which you need to watch out for!
