HOTEL REVIEW # 210 Vellin; Vik

MY TRAVEL STYLE: If possible, I try to stay away from business hotels and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences.

LOCATION: 20 minutes from Vik but a charming location with farm animals around and views of the water and mountains.

TYPE OF ROOM: All rooms are probably the same.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Beds are soft and sheets were OK (could have been higher quality)

LIGHTING: Tons of lighting in room.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Bathroom floor is shared with the shower and toilet so water gets everywhere. Shower was only warm for me and cold for my wife which made her take a shower the next day providing for a later start. OK water pressure.

TOILETRIES: None. Bring your own.

CLEANLINESS: Entire hotel and room is spotless.

A/C: None… opening window does the job.

STYLE OF ROOM: Scandinavian… Clean, comfortable, but no style.

COMMON AREA: There is no common area to hang out in other than the restaurant which has tables and chairs (no couches).

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: Room was very quiet and the sunlight could not be blocked by the windows.

FOOD: Dinner was enjoyable. Fish was tasty but nowhere near my favorite meal in Iceland in the 3 days I have been here. Breakfast was all cold items like all of our 9 hotels in Iceland. Nothing special here but expected better when at a farm.

TV/INTERNET: No TV in room and no internet is available.

SERVICE: People were very nice but didn’t experience ‘out of their way’ service.

SUMMARY: I wanted to stay at the Volcano hotel but they were full. We ended up really enjoying our time here as the location is very pleasant and the hotel is comfortable. The shower being cold was an issue, however.

Room Tip: Last room from reception as windows on both two walls versus just one for the other rooms.

We spent 2 nights in Guesthouse Vellir while in the area. This is a great place to stay if you are traveling through South Iceland. It is located in-between Skogar and Vik. We decided to stay two nights because we wanted to hike from Skogar to Thorsmork through the Fimmvorduhalsf pass. It was a great location to do the hike because we were close to Skogar, but away from the camping areas. The food was good, and the kitchen made us sandwiches to take on the hike! The room was excellent - we had a view of the ocean and the facilities were clean. They also have horses and we went out riding to the beach. I would stay here again and would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the ocean!

We stayed at the guesthouse for two nights to explore the highlands around Landmannalaugar.
On the first view this guesthouse seems to be quite inviting. The rooms are newly furnished and quite bright. After the check-in we just wondered that there is neither wifi nor telephone available for guests in a location for hikers.
But there are two things we could not accept regarding the food. First of all the dinner recommended highly by previous reviewers seems to have undergone a dramatic change. The three course dinner offered for 6000 ISK was composed of an instant asparagus soup as a starter, dead-fried cod as main course and skyr plus choco splits as dessert. After having enjoyed so many great meals all over the island (eg a real exciting three course menu at Hotel Budir on Snaefellsnes costs only 5000 ISK) we felt really cheated by the hosts of the guesthouse Vellir. The quality of breakfast was also rather low, even for Iceland. The coffee for breakfast was instant, fo us a no-go.
Overall we had the feeling that the owners invested a lot into the furnishing and appearance of the guesthouse and now want to earn as much money by offering really low quality of food.
Therefore we would not recommend this guesthouse.

We stayed here two nights as a base to explore the Southern Icelandic coast. The place is clean, the dinners and breakfasts were very well done. We had the less expensive room that shared a bathroom with others but that wasn't a problem as it was just next door, and very nice. Two quibbles: the walls are thin as paper and we could hear every dish clatter from the kitchen and every word spoken by our next door neighbors. Also, the beds are all single beds. But we were very happy there.

Room Tip: I would try to be away from the kitchen to reduce the noise level.

We pulled in tired and hungry - we were cared for wonderfully. Amazing food, comfortable and clean rooms with modern appointments. What more could you ask for?
