Okay, for most of our stay, the cloud and rain would have obscured much of the view, but we benefited from a crack in the clouds and the lights of Reykjavik were on display. And this was a short walk up the hill from our hotel.

This was the rotating restaurant atop the Perlan building. Rotating to provide a 360° view - I imagine this would be even more spectacular in the Summer evenings! There was only a buffet available, but this allowed us to sample a range of Icelandic treats. Price was not cheap, but the quality of food and service was worth it.

This is voted one of the world's top rotating restaurants, and on a windy / slightly wet summers evening, it's wonderful to watch the weather and the scenery slowly change as you rotate around at a gentle pace whilst being served a meal. The food was reasonably, but not that exciting (except the fact that we were offered whale - a definite distress - how can people continue to eat these beautiful mammals?!). So we stuck to fish and meat - all reasonably tasty but in no way really "cordon blue". The desert arrived on a slate with mock snow - be interesting to know how this was done... This is somewhere you have to visit in Rekjavik, if you can afford it, simply to have experienced the changing views. A very pleasant evening.

Perlan, also know as the "pearl" because of its imposing silver white domed top is the place to dine to begin, enjoy, and in my opinion, to end your visit in Iceland. The day time food in the high end cafeteria section on the fourth that the tourists usually visit - and obviously the subject of most of the reviews on this site - is excellent and the views are incredible,
However an evening on the fifth floor revolving restaurant is a part of Iceland that no discerning visitor should miss. The international cuisine is 5 star with a strong Iceland flavor, as is the extremely cordial and friendly service. The lamb is not to be missed and the seasonal buffet dinner is a must. A dinner usually takes about one revolution as your table constantly changes its spectacular view - even by Iceland standards. An additional unique experience can occur if you leave your seat and walk to the stationary center of the building. Your table and friends have, as if by magic, moved slightly to the right as they continue their visual journey in this remarkable revolving restaurant.
My many Icelandic colleagues and friends love to dine at "the Pearl" for truly special celebrations and occasions. As a frequent repeat visitor to Iceland, to me the overall Perlan experience sums up what is best in this incredible country.

We came here for the Saga Museum, and wound up grabbing lunch. It's a reasonable walk from the city center if you're looking to take in some of the local neighborhoods on the way there - maybe 30-45 minutes walking time from our hotel (City Center Hotel). The food is cafeteria-style, but perfectly good. The asparagus soup was delicious, as was the egg/cucumber/cheese sandwich we split. Nice 360-degree views from the observation deck of Reykjavik and the surrounding mountains.

The Perlan isn't where you go for a cheap night out. You go to enjoy excellent food in stunning surrounds. That is what you get - the food is modern and prepared so you enjoy a balanced mix of tastes, along the lines of the better 1 and 2 hat restaurants in Sydney. The service is excellent - showing old fashioned style and professionalism. The view from the revolving restaurant is a knockout.
