“Fab Hotel”
Reviewed February 4, 2009

I stayed at the Nordica for three nights as part of the Icelandair package which is amazing value. We were given a 'plus' room with views of the sea and Esja and complimentary breakfast (our friends who booked the same deal but separately were not so lucky however with a standard room with views not so pleasant at the rear of the hotel and no breakfast). All aspects of the hotel are spacious and modern (the models and crew of Britain's next top model were staying here at the same time as us - this gives you an idea of the style of the hotel).

Breakfast selection was vast and of good quality, unfortunately Vox was closed but we did eat at the Bistro one evening. Be careful when using the excursion desk at the hotel, we were told it was not possible to do a snow mobiling activity in the same area as dog sledding, yet when we arrived at the sledding location, there was snow mobiling available directly opposite and one of the excursion company's very own minibuses there! Very annoying as it is very expensive (150 euro for one hour) if you book independently.

Speaking of prices, although the krona is weak, Iceland is still expensive. Many companies are now starting to charge in euros too, which is not good for British travellers.

We had hired a jeep so during the day the hotel's out of town location did not cause a problem, however in the evening travelling relatively short distances to restaurants, a typical taxi would cost about 10 to 15 pounds.

I stayed here with my partner just after the new year booked through Lastminute. Five nights (ex meals) and flights with Icelandair cost us £391 each. If you like a modern, impersonal chain hotel then this is for you. We booked the Hilton based on its number one rating at the time (now no 2). We hadn’t booked stay with breakfast but we did try it one day. A good spread but not the best we’ve had. The room wasn’t a bad size with a view overlooking the back carpark (not that exciting, but you don’t spend that much time gazing out of the window and at this time of the year there are only four hours of daylight!). Bathroom was fine, just a shower though, no bath, with Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries. Did not make use of any hotel facilities like their spa etc which would have been extra. The hotel is a good 20 minutes walk from town though. You can also make use of the hotel’s free shuttle service into town, and although infrequent, you should be able to time your activities to make use of this (get a map from reception, printed with shuttle timings). We also made use of the buses which are relatively easy to use. The hotel also has a tour desk/gift shop although they do not change currency there. You can book tours from here. We booked a Golden Circle tour (a must!) with them. Although there are different companies who do this tour, we booked with Reykjavik Excursions. Pick up the pocket-sized Visitor’s Guide book free from there or the Tourist Information Centre – there is a 10% discount coupon in the back if you book from this hotel. It cost us £50 each and the tour also included a trip to a Geothermal Power Plant not mentioned in the tour description (Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir). In the vicinity for food – Pizza Hut (pretty good, we ate there two nights), Hot Chilli restaurant (quite enjoyed this). We hadn’t booked breakfast, but there is a 24/7 supermarket type place nearby where you can get snackage.

Top tips
1) Golden Circle Tour – do it!
2) Try their traditional meat soup (lamb and veg) – best at The Pearl (free soup and roll refills!)
3) Try fish and chips at Icelandic Fish & Chips, an organic bistro at Tryggvagotu 8.
4) Lonely Planet does a pocket-sized Best of Reykjavik booklet – we never put this down and there are handy maps as well.
5) Use your credit card – day 1 gave us an exchange rate of 172.49 isk to the pound and by day 5 it was 182.61 isk.

The Nordica (now a Hilton) is one of Reykjavik’s finest hotels in every way –except– location. Not that its location is terrible, but it’s just not in the best spot for most tourists, especially first-time tourists. Despite having a rather blocky, concrete exterior, the Nordica’s interior is pure Scandinavian charm: minimalist, clean lines and immaculate service. Be sure to ask for a room on an upper floor, with a view of Esja, the beautiful mountain towering above Reykjavik. The restaurant and bar are fine. One of Reykjavik’s best public swimming pools is across the street, as is a great garden park and the city zoo. The Nordica Spa, right in the hotel, is absolutely fantastic; even if you don’t end up staying in the hotel, you might want to visit. There is a 24 hour pharmacy and convenience store within walking distance. While some may walk from the Nordica to downtown, I’d recommend a car for the trip. Given that downtown is really where you want to be (as a tourist), Nordica's location is a definite drawback. But if you get it at the right price, go for it.

On the up side, the Hilton offers the usual standard you can expect from this US chain. On the down side this means that you can miss out on some of the cultural experiences that a locally-owned hotel might provide. Overall, good service, although the hotel's laundry service was particularly expensive (expected this as it is Iceland). We had a lovely Christmas meal in the hotel restaurant, 'Vox', which unfortunately resulted in the budget for the entire trip being cut in half. The downside is the location - about a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre (but a pleasant walk). The hotel has a shuttle bus to the town centre, but it does not have the hotel logo on the side which resulted in us missing the bus (given a number of tour buses stop at the hotel) and the front desk were a little unhelpful about this. Otherwise, the staff were terrific, and like many Icelanders, spoke English, which assists all us non multi-lingual types greatly.

  • Liked — The standard you can expect from the Hilton
  • Disliked — Out of town a little, and the room service food was very limited

Gorgeous rooms, gorgeous foods, very polite helpful staff, a relaxed atmosphere, I wish all hotels were like this.

Iceland's economy has been through the wringer as we all know, so things were cheap, but as it is generally an expensive place things like cabs in their 'cheaper' light are pretty much akin to standard prices in London, therefore the only thing i will say is that this hotel is a little far from downtown where all the fun and action is.

It's an easy cab ride, but doing this a few times a day would have been very expensive had the krona not fallen so harshly, but now it's so manageable that i would recommend Hotel Nordica to everyone.

I do not have a bad thing to say about it.

  • Liked — The staff, the rooms the food
  • Disliked — It's a little out the way from all the downtown fun, but easily remodied in a cab

This was a great hotel to stay in. The room was fantastic and very clean. The bed was so comfortable, I didn't even want to get out of bed in the morning. Although everything is expensive in Reykjavik, I was disappointed that I would be charged a hefty 50$ for use of the pool. It was a great stay - but not sure I would go back only because it was just a bit too fancy for my taste :)
