Description: We have just moved our restaurant after 27 years. We are now located inside the City Hall Building which is located in the lake right downtown in Reykajvik. We opened our restaurant at our old location ,which is only 1 min away from the City Hall, in 1986 and we are a family owned restaurant, with the same owners since 1986.

We had a delightful evening at this restaurant. The staff was professional and friendly. The lamb was delicious. The ambiance is unique and geared to a relaxing evening with well prepared food and good service.

“Great food, lovely atmosphere”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Vid Tjornina was recommended to us as a restaurant with a special atmosphere and it lived up to that reputation. It is more like a house than a restaurant, with lots of different rooms decorated in Edwardian and Victorian antiques and photos - very shabby chic. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is lovely. Two of us chose the 3 course mystery menu, and two went a la carte and we ended up both having 4 courses for the price of three - so very good value! The fish in particular was excellent and wine, whilst not cheap, was nowhere near as expensive as we had been warned before we came to Iceland. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

“Simple but nice cooking.”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

When steeping into "Við Tjörnina" you may think you have I gone back in time The restaurant decor is late 1800 early 1900 and the feeling is more like you are in a private house then a restaurant. The food is simply and the service is good. On the menu you will find mostly fish dishes.

“Fabulous food”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

We had a great night at this restaurant. There were 16 of us and luckily our tour guide managed to get us a reservation. We were all in the Royalty Room, taking the record for the most people around the table.
The host/co-owner (with his mother) is a fantastic character, really warm, welcoming and funny.
We were given four courses and told we could have meat or veggie options if required. Someone in our party who has various allergies was totally catered for. The fish soup starter was the best fish soup I've ever had. All the food was brilliant.
Just eating in the restaurant is recommended. It is decorated in 'grandmother' style, kind of Victoriana-like.
We had ling for our main course, salmon in between, and I can't remember what for pudding (sorry!). But it was all extremely yummy. I'd recommend this place to anyone - it really was a special evening.

“Memorable Experience”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

Perhaps the first thing to stress is that you shouldn't be put off by the slightly worn appearance of Vid Tjornina or by the its slightly awkward location (find the wooden Dom church in the city centre, stand with your left shoulder facing the main door and the restaurant is 50 metres away on your left).

Going up the stairs you find yourself in a longish corridor with rooms off either side, some with one table, some with more. At the right hand end of the corridor there are a couple of sitting rooms where we spent a happy 45 minutes chatting with the owner before our meal.

The decor of the sitting rooms is very much family home decoration and helps create a warm and friendly atmosphere - we liked this a lot.

The menu is short and there is the option of the 3 or 4 course "surprise" menu for a fixed price of 5900 or 6900 isk. We opted for the latter but were also presented with an extra course of smoked salmon.

We enjoyed fish soup, one of the best cooked pieces of cod I've had (and that includes a few Michelin star eateries!), and some delightful cheesecake.

We also enjoyed a chat with our waiter, a Kurdish young gentleman whom we could not resist asking how a young Kurd had found himself as a waiter in an Icelandic restaurant. He was happy to explain..... but you'll have to ask him yourself!

We'd thoroughly recommend Vid Tjornina for the whole experience - not just the food!
