Description: The housing Laekjarbrekka was built as a dwelling in 1834, by the influential Danish ship owner and merchant P.C Knutzon. Hel also build a bakery and a turf house in the same lot and brought the Danish baker T.D Bernhöft to Iceland to practice his trade here. Bernhöft, who was for a long time the only baker in Reykjavík, bought the houses in 1845. The Bernhöft family continued in the baking business at this location for two generations, building a retail shop onto the dwelling house in 1855. This addition is today the part of the restaurant facing the main street. The building was used as a dwelling until 1961, and a small shop was there until the time of reconstruction began in 1980. By then, the house had fallen into disrepair, and had been neglected for a long time. Its future had been uncertain until 1979, when it and several other houses in the same block were declared protected buildings. During reconstruction, every attempt was made to preserve the original appearance. It is therefore with great pleasure to invite you to dine in this beautifully restored house, which has an eventful 180-year history behind it.

“Great portions and yummy.”

We had a delicious late lunch here. I had the salmon pasta which was absolutely delicious, a huge portion that was too big to finish. My boyfriend had the fish of the day and it was also delicious. Yum.

“A taste of Iceland”
Reviewed July 9, 2014 via mobile

Service was impeccable and the cuisine was full of flavour. Had the puffin and the whale and couldn't fault either one. The whale in particular was amazing. And the hot chocolate was a perfect finish to a wonderful meal. Takk!

“Birthday dinner”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

This is an exclusive restaurant in the heart of Reykjavik. We were very welcomed and got a nice table at the main window. It was a very cosy and romantic stile in an oldfashioned way with white table-cloths and candle lights. The service was excellent. We had whale for the mains served with a very good wine and the dessert was delicious. All 4 of us were very pleased with the eavning and we can highly recommend this restaurant.

“Great taste of Iceland”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

Atmospheric chic in Reykjavik. We booked for an evening meal and it was a wonderful experience. Lovely, high-end atmosphere but with the personal touch that made all diners welcome and valued. Our waiter E-Thor, good company, efficient and charming. We had the Icelandic taste starter and enjoyed all items, beautifully cooked and presented - except the fermented shark. My husband felt the need to take the challenge and it certainly is a taste he'll never forget, but I won't expand as you may wish to try it yourself! Fish, perfectly cooked, Mountain and Bay, wonderful lamb and fabulous langoustine. Desserts - delicious. We had a great bottle of wine on our waiter's recommendation accompanied by wonderful Icelandic water that is free and plentiful in all Icelandic restaurants. We only stayed 3 days and had wonderful food throughout or stay using the recommendations from the hotel. The Icelandic people are lovely and approachable so be advised by them and have a great time.

“Maybe 3.5 Stars?”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

Terribly weak wine list, inexperienced server with limited English vocabulary started our dinner off poorly.
Main dishes--both fish--were excellent especially the arctic char.
The puffin appetizer was relatively tasteless and tame, while the beet-goat cheese salad was ordinary.
Décor is very simple.
