Description: The housing Laekjarbrekka was built as a dwelling in 1834, by the influential Danish ship owner and merchant P.C Knutzon. Hel also build a bakery and a turf house in the same lot and brought the Danish baker T.D Bernhöft to Iceland to practice his trade here. Bernhöft, who was for a long time the only baker in Reykjavík, bought the houses in 1845. The Bernhöft family continued in the baking business at this location for two generations, building a retail shop onto the dwelling house in 1855. This addition is today the part of the restaurant facing the main street. The building was used as a dwelling until 1961, and a small shop was there until the time of reconstruction began in 1980. By then, the house had fallen into disrepair, and had been neglected for a long time. Its future had been uncertain until 1979, when it and several other houses in the same block were declared protected buildings. During reconstruction, every attempt was made to preserve the original appearance. It is therefore with great pleasure to invite you to dine in this beautifully restored house, which has an eventful 180-year history behind it.

This is a restaurant with a beautiful classical dining room, linen tablecloths, excellent service, top notch sample starters of minki whale, puffin, aged shark; plus wonderful entrée of plaice that we shared. Excellent wine selection. It's expensive, and at least two tables besides us were tourists -- one group of Norwegian men who had just flown in from skiing across Greenland and were still wearing their trekking clothes, and one group of German seniors wearing suits. Icelanders probably only come on special occasions, but we'd recommend it to anyone.

We ate here on our last night in Reykjavik and it was worth the wait! The food was amazing, the service fantastic and was superb value for money.

Everything from the service, the food, the drinks and the atmosphere was absolutely five star. The best cut of fillet steak I've ever tasted, Eyjafjallajökull itself is the best dessert i have ever taste. All in all, a stunning meal that I'd recommend to absolutely anybody.

Although it looks unimpressive from the outside and is on the main tourist route this is a wonderful restaurant. The staff are extremely helpful and attentive, as well as being very friendly and accommodating, and know both the food and wine very well. The lamb is spectacular. For once in Reykjavik the cost of a meal was truly worth it. It will be at the top of my list to return to.

We were a group of 8 persons, 3 of the small children. We just dropped by for dinner and we got our chambre separee. The fermented shark smelt worse than it tasted. But the lamb was the best I ever had.
