Description: The housing Laekjarbrekka was built as a dwelling in 1834, by the influential Danish ship owner and merchant P.C Knutzon. Hel also build a bakery and a turf house in the same lot and brought the Danish baker T.D Bernhöft to Iceland to practice his trade here. Bernhöft, who was for a long time the only baker in Reykjavík, bought the houses in 1845. The Bernhöft family continued in the baking business at this location for two generations, building a retail shop onto the dwelling house in 1855. This addition is today the part of the restaurant facing the main street. The building was used as a dwelling until 1961, and a small shop was there until the time of reconstruction began in 1980. By then, the house had fallen into disrepair, and had been neglected for a long time. Its future had been uncertain until 1979, when it and several other houses in the same block were declared protected buildings. During reconstruction, every attempt was made to preserve the original appearance. It is therefore with great pleasure to invite you to dine in this beautifully restored house, which has an eventful 180-year history behind it.

We went there early before the rush to try the tastes of Iceland starter on the menu. What we got was a wonderful experience from Frosty, the waiter, who explained to us each taste and the history behind it. It's one of the rare places you can be bold and try the fermented shark. Don't be intimidated, but also don't smell it before you try it! The rest of the menu was delicious and the service was fantastic. It truly was a great experience for anyone who wants to sample the culture. It's a little pricey, but certainly worth it.

My husband and I went for our anniversary and had an excellent experience! The food was wonderful! Serving some more daring Icelandic dishes like horse, whale, puffin and fermented shark - which we were told are now eaten primarily by more isolated Icelandic communities or on special occasions; as well as some more conventional (but still spectacular) fare.

Our server was excellent and described each dish in detail which satisfied our inquisitive nature!

Would absolutely go there again!!!

This restaurant was recommended to us. We new it wasn't cheap but thought we had to try it. The wine list was extensive and expensive. Was it worth it! We went for a set menu and al carte the food was fabulous the lamb was so good and the desserts were one of the best I've tasted. The servise was good and there recommendations were spot on.
Down side the setting didn't match the exellent food and wine tasted.

I have eaten here a number of times over the past several years. The food is good and the atmosphere is charming. Although they accept reservations over the internet, mine was somehow misplaced (I had a copy of their confirmation with me). This was not an issue.

Had a nice meal, the prices a tad high so be prepared.
Do not try the putrified shark as the smell is awful and the taste stayed with me for days!. The food is nice but like a said it is expensive.
