Description: An Icelandic Icon The Heart of Reykjavik City The spacious but intimate Café Paris is a café and a restaurant known for first-class service and bistro-style meals, primarily made using fresh local produce, in the heart of the city centre, Austurvöllur. Austurvöllur is Iceland?s Champ du Mars, where locals relax on warm summer afternoons, overlooked by the Icelandic Parliament, and the Dómkirkjan. Its long history and esteemed reputation has contributed to it being one of the most successful restaurants and cafés in all of Iceland. This year, Café Paris celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Guests were asked for their feedback to help the management continue to offer the highest standards. In its anniversary year, Café Paris has a professional staff providing great service, knowledgeable about the menu, wine, cocktail and coffee selections and the mouth-watering desserts. A Landmark for all Café Paris is a city landmark meaning different things to different people. It?s where artists contemplate in solitude, writers busily document their thoughts on a laptop, politicians escape heated debates and share a quiet moment together, young adults giggle and smile over Mocha and sweetened Latte, young mothers share a slice of a homemade chocolate cake and creamy coffee, students gather to celebrate and hungry travellers come to experience Icelandic bistro culture. In summer, the tables outdoors facing the Parliament are always packed. Sheltered from the North Atlantic breeze, days of sunshine in the very heart of the city are hard to resist, and the well-trained and experienced staff make sure none go hungry or thirsty. Eat in style There is nothing like the house white wine boiled mussels and a glass of Pinot Grigio on a beautiful summer?s day, or a succulent burger with a bun fresh out of the oven and ice-cold beer. For dessert, the house speciality is a French chocolate cake?freshly baked in house?and best served with deluxe coffee. The well kept secret recipe is legendary in Reykjavík. A Weekend Hotspot Come the weekend, Café Paris turns into a sophisticated bar with live jazz music playing from 11 pm. The atmosphere is a unique fusion of a Parisian jazz club and a sophisticated Icelandic wine bar. The wide variety of imaginative cocktails is the creation of ambitious bartenders who aim to impress with rich flavouring. Café Paris caters to all ages and nationalities. Café Paris may seem to be a Parisian café in Reykjavík but local culinary traditions and fresh Icelandic produce are at the heart of this Reykjavík bistro.

“Parisian cafe atmosphere, good prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

Very central, a Parisian style corner cafe with lots of windows for people watching. A fairly normal menu (for us Brits anyway - burgers, tortillas, salads etc) at good prices. Cosy atmosphere - good for food, coffee or just a bar visit. Prompt service (impressive English spoken by all), would recommend.

“good meal on a cold night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

We stumbled in on a cold night after waking around looking for a place for dinner. We had a burger and a seafood dish, which was good/average for food in Reykjavik

“Nice atmosphere, good food average service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

This is another place I've visited over the years when in Reykjavik. Ate in here last week - mid week early evening and although not busy at the time we arrived it did get busier by the time we left.

You kinda help yourself to a table which I don't mind doing and help yourself to a high chair - which again I don'd mind doing - but when there were 3 staff all stood by the bar doing not alot it would have been nice to have an offer of help.

Menu's were plonked on the table and abandoned for us to look at - thankfully this member of staff didn't return and the next one who spoke to us was more attentive - slightly.

The food was good - I had the Minke Whale steak - which I couldn't fault - cooked to perfection and very flavoursome, my wife had the lamb - again this was well cooked very well. Our 1 yr old had a very reasonable little meal as well.

Overall we had a nice meal in a nice atmosphere but if I had to be critical the staff were suffering from that all to common affliction of being young, dis-interested and unmanaged. Maybe because it was early evening mid week or the managers night off. It wouldn't stop me from going again as it was child friendly but when there is so much good competition in Reykjavik they need to be on top of their game all the time.

“Disappointing - Extremely slow and lackluster service.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

I live and work in Reykjavik, and to be honest in the many years I have been here I had never been into Cafe Paris. I knew it by reputation, which was supposed to be good.

My family and some friends were visiting me the past few weeks and we went in. Atmosphere was nice and the place looked very cosy. Then we sat down. Menus were given to us by the the less than interested waitress who then disappeared for the next ten minutes. When she came back and ask if we were ready my colleague said yes (but to be honest I think he was mumbling and she might have misunderstood him) and she just walked off. It took another 15 minutes for her to come back and we finally placed our order. Coffees to start followed by some food. The coffee took yet another 15 minutes and the food came 10 minutes after that. Now if this had been rush hour and with wall to wall customers with only a skeleton crew, I could have been more forgiving and understanding, but the place was only half full at best and clearly there were more than enough staff on duty to handle it if was full. Food was OK, but nothing too impressive.

On a positive note, Cafe Paris does make a good professionally made cup of coffee, when it eventually arrives.

To sum up:
Nice decor, good atmosphere, good coffee, average food, terrible table service, somber looking staff (if I didn't know any better I would think they were working at a funeral home.)

My suggestion:
Hire some staff who have some customer service training and look like they enjoy what they are doing.

Service was ok, but the food quality was truly below Icelandic standards.
We have eaten much better in Reykjavik...
