Booked and paid for 3 nights with Apartment K in March 2011, through an Agent with whom I have booked on numerous occasions. The positive reviews in Trip Advisor influenced our choice.
On arrival quote from the Owner " You have picked the busiest weekend ever to visit us, (Marathon - Annual Culture Day - Conference with 3,000 delegates) I do not know if I have an apartment for you. There is a studio but it is only 2 metres wide and you can only have that for your first night then will have to move, probably out of the City."
No apoIogy given for over booking, this is common/accepted practice throughout the world apparently.
But then, after declining this option, it transpired that there was a 1 bedroom apt available for 3 nights but at a minimum cost of 33 euros extra per night. We apparently did not have any option !
Were given a lift by the Owner's Manageress to the apartment. We could have walked there more quickly. Surprise ! this apartment was actually the address listed in my confirmation email received from the booking Agent, after payment had been made.
The apartment was an average modern 1 bed ground floor flat, close to city centre. Found out on 1st morning that shower fitting head was broken and the sink drain was blocked causing flooding when sink was emptied.
In actual fact extra payment was not pursued by the Owner but that initial half an hour with him in reality spoiled what should have been a relaxing weekend. Perhaps he needed some "cash in hand" for his own weekend.
Thankfully his demeanour is not what we experienced in all other contact with Icelandic people.
I will now be very wary of booking any accommodation through what I thought was a trusted Agent.

Room Tip: Accommodation was acceptable in respect of central location but only 2 star.

Staying in an apartment is a bit different than a hotel - in both good and bad ways. We had arrived at Apt. K after staying in full-service hotels in Norway for almost 2 weeks. The apartment was spacious, clean and in a decent location. Bad side - because there is no lobby, you basically wait on the curb (in our case, hungry, tired and with too many suitcases!) until the staff can come attend to you. The staff is very diligent and prompt (eager to please!) but still, there is one person on at a time, so if they are busy, you wait... on a curb, in the cold.... and tired. Once settled, the apts are very nice, better than hotel rooms with the exception that you do not have fresh towels, bedding or paper goods (bring your own TP!). We could not get the TV to work - but if we had, the equipment looked top notch.

The Picture above does not do this hotel/apartment justice. We selected the hotel/apartment off the internet knowing nothing about it and it was fabulous. Our apartment was better than advertised and literally 10 meters from the mainstreet in Reykjavik. It was Modern comtemporary, funky cool place, great local and wonderfull staff. TV was huge, Bathroom was made of black rock with some of the coolest hotel fixtures i have ever seen. Room decorated with an eclectic, funky cool vibe The One bedroom is fantastic for couples but worked in a pinch for the family of 4... The owner was fantastic, talked to us a lot about Iceland, and was super helpful. The family agreed this was the best apartment we stayed in on our 48 day round the world trip. Hats of to Apartment 1. One tip... the owner has rennovated a number of apartments around town so each one is different, with differnt features and benefits. He is very accomodating so feel free to give him a call if you have any questions or he can do something to help you. Process is to go to one location, press the button and someone meets you in about 5 minutes and walks you to your hotel. Metered parking is available and not expensive, maybe $10 a day.... Great experience.

Stayed here for a week at Hverfisgata 37 and at first we were unsure about the place due to the the steel siding on the outside. Once inside, the place was great. There was a bedroom, a kitchen, a pull-out bed, a sofa, and a bathroom.

The bathroom is not sealed at the top, so you can hear your family/friends in there, but it was not a big deal. Free Wifi is a big plus although the wifi was not always the best connection. The room was clean although they did not clean the place. Towels were changed every 2-3 days.

One downside is that people are out at all hours of the night so it might be loud for some people. However, I think it will be hard to find this location at a better price.

Sleep: The place is very cozy we had two bedrooms with king tempurpedic beds. The couch could fit about two people comfortably, but we were not sure if it was so clean. The place will provide you with bed sheets if you need.

Shower: This was probably the most shocking part to us. The shower looked like a wooden pot. It was a sit down shower. The water pressure and everything was fine besides for the fact that it looked like a pot.

Noise: On Friday and Saturday nights there were people partying till about 5 or 6am. Also when we went, there was the gay parade so even more people was out. Our crowd is in our mid twenties so we didn't mind the noise so much. You can try closing the windows to minimized the noise but you can still hear it a little.

Location: The location of the hotel is great. There are plenty of stores, restaurants, bars, tourist centers, etc.. near by.

Kitchen: The kitchen did not have a microwave, although it did have everything else. We went to "BONUS" a market near by to purchase food for breakfast.

Service: Maids did not come to clean the rooms unless you asked for it. I would suggest that you ask for extra toilet paper and towels before you need it because it takes a while for them to come.

We were supposed to be staying elsewhere but were moved to Apartment K (Lindargata) when we arrived due to it being a festival weekend and very busy. We were initially upset but the staff at Apartment K were very accommodating and extremely helpful, even calling the pre-arranged tours we'd booked to inform them of our change of address. Lindargata is a quiet street, very close to the beautiful waterfront and close to the main centre. We had heard that it was very noisy at night in the centre but our location was perfect and so we didn't hear any of that. The apartment itself was large and clean, had a large flat screen TV, apple TV, ipod dock etc. We would stay here again (by choice this time) but the curtains are see-through and being in Iceland in August meant it was only dark between about midnight and 3am. We had eyesmasks and so had no problems!

We booked a studio apartment for our first trip to Iceland. It cost €89 per night which we thought was very reasonable for central Reykjavik.

When we arrived, we were dropped off at the main Apartment K on Thingholtsstraeti. We were greeted by a lovely lady called Iris and a dog called Charlie! We were then taken personally to our apartment on nearby Skolastraeti. It was a stand-alone apartment as central as could possibly be and we were amazed when we saw it. Thoroughly modern and extremely clean. There was a fully-equipped kitchen, a large flat-screen TV, a breakfasting table, a lovely sofa, a gorgeous bed, an iPod docking station, loads of sockets. The bathroom was also lovely.

The lady who checked us in pointed out a 24-hour supermarket to us which we'd never have found out for ourselves! She also informed us that there was building work going on in the yard behind the apartment but reassured us that the work wouldn't begin until 10am at the earliest. However, the morning after, as we were getting ready to go explore the city, a huge digger started working right outside our bedroom window at 8.15am. We were worried. I sent an email to Apartment K and when we got home later, there was a bottle of wine and two sets of earplugs waiting for us on the table! Plus an email apologising and explaining that the manager had spoken to the builders. Sure enough, we never heard another peep out of them. I feel that this is symbolic of excellent service.

The staff are exceedingly helpful - they will call excursion companies for you to tell them where to pick you up from. They very kindly called the airport shuttle company to tell them where to pick us up from. But what we liked most was the fuss-free check-in and check-out. So friendly but not overbearingly so. The free Wi-Fi was also fantastic. It meant we were able to keep in touch and post photos to make people at home jealous!

Overall, I can't recommend Apartment K enough. It really did play a part in making our stay in Iceland as fabulous as it was.

Room Tip: If you're a couple, I recommend the studio apartment.
