“Great Value Stay in Reykjavik”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

We had a great time staying here.

We were well looked after throughout, the rooms were well organised albeit basic.

The breakfast is only available for an hour, but the staff were flexible when we needed it earlier. It's a continental breakfast plus cereals, tea, coffee and juice.

There are no televisions or in fact anything beyond the most basic facilities in the rooms, but it was just what we needed. The free Wifi works well and that serves most needs if you've got a tablet / laptop.

The guesthouse is only 10 - 15 mins walk from the town centre, but it's quite and has great parking.

Thoroughly recommended for the budget traveller.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty similar.

Alba Guesthouse has a quite reasonable pricing for a three person bedroom BUT the 3rd bed was completely unsleapabul . We ended up all using the king size bed instead. We spoke to the manager who just said "we have not had any complaints about the bed before" - and she was somewhat unwilling to help us. In the end she offered us another room with three single beds of a lesser standard an offer we decided to decline. Rather have one king size of good standard than three single beds of lesser. Enough said about the beds!

Due to unfortunate circumstances regarding out transport from the airport we arrived very late and the staff had gone to bed and did not answer the phone. In the end we managed to wake a guest to let us in. In my world - if a costumer does not show up, you give them a call and ask if something has happened.

We would not return to this guesthouse even though we can still recommend it to couples.

The building housing the Alba Guesthouse has the clean lines of mid-century Modern. The decor tends towards Bauhaus, with minimal decoration--Gustav Klimt posters excepted--blond wood floors, and well-styled furnishings. The small common area is equipped with a comfortable couch and chairs plus coffee table.

Rooms have sinks and wardrobes--all quite tasteful; this may be why twin rooms feel cramped. Breakfast (French press coffee, fresh breads, cheese, meat, tomatoes, etc.)is served from a buffet in a bright room overlooking a grassy private yard. (Breakfast is not included for the family rooms.)

The website states the Alba is 500 meters from the BSI bus station, but if so, that is "as the crow flies." Because of highway interchanges, a walk to the station is complex and requires at least 20 minutes with luggage. A taxi is recommended.

The Alba is located in a lovely residential neighborhood that is difficult to access and because of the aforementioned highways, not as quiet as "residential neighborhood" might suggest. There are no shops or restaurants nearby. Count on a 15 minute uphill walk to Hallgrímskirkja, beyond which lies Reykjavik's commercial district.

Kitchen facilities are unavailable to guests, though you can request coffee or tea at a charge of 250 ISK.

Wireless internet for those with their own laptops is high speed and free.

Shoes are not to be worn in the house. There is no accommodation for luggage storage or remaining in the house past the check-out time of 11 AM.

Reservations may be cancelled without charge up to midnight 3 days prior to your stay. N.B. That is midnight GMT+2, not local Reykjavik time.

A guesthouse employee is always on the property, though this might be a foreign guest worker with limited authority or English. The receptionist who checked us in did not find it necessary to be friendly or forthcoming.

The Alba is located a little off the beaten path - about a 15 minute walk from the BSI bus terminal - but the location is quiet and convenient to the city center. Just across the street is a beautiful park with playground, and downtown is a 5-10 minute walk from there. You will appreciate the Alba's location away from downtown on weekends because the rúntur is very noisy and goes all night. The beds are very comfortable and the guesthouse is quiet. There are 3 shared bathrooms (2 with a shower) but I never had to wait despite the house being completely occupied while we were there. The complimentary breakfast is delicious and the free wi-fi was a great perk! I loved my stay at the Alba and will definitely stay there again!

A really amazing value! Only 10 minutes walk from the city center, we chose to stay at Alba for 5 nights during a recent trip. We were planning on moving locations, but liked Alba so much that we extended our stay!

Rooms are clean and pleasant, though in typical Reykjavik fashion rather sparse. Shared bathroom. Staff was very friendly and helpful, more than willing to help us talk through itineraries and give recommendations. The breakfast was great-- coffee was French press and tea provided in an individual teapot. Generous portions and freshly baked bread also included. Alba was a very small guesthouse, and it felt close to being in your own home.

Next trip to Reykjavik, I'll be at Alba.

Amazing place to stay for those looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay. There were three of us sharing a room for six days. The room was clean, comfortable, and pleasant. The breakfasts in the morning were generous and delicious, and key to being able to be ready in the morning for some of the tours we took outside of reykjavik. Sigrun and the others were kind and charming. A great experience, totally recommended!

Booked on line (www.alba.is) and had a quick response, and initial payment done on line aswell. Stayed here during a too short 4 day trip to Iceland and could not have chosen better. The owner was so helpful, the staff courteous and efficient. Breakfast with coffee was excellent, as were the delicious mini croissants. Almost as good as French ones, and that is saying something!! The nordic style of decor means clean and simple lines and this house has that. Rooms are spotless and very quiet, (there are 10 plus an apartment) although the walls are a little thin! Bathrooms are clean with excellent showers. There is private parking if you are bringing a car, although the location is in a kind of cul de sac, where there is no traffic and plenty of places to park anyway. Access to the city centre means only a short 15 minute walk, and a only a 10 minute walk to the main bus terminal for excursions or transport to and from the airport at Keflavik. If you are booking any coach trips, pickups are done, but only in small vehicles as the guesthouse's location means that coaches cannot collect. If you are on foot but fancy seeing the local sights with a little more pace, the guesthouse has at least one new electric bicycle (they plan to get another one) for hire. Now I cycle alot, so the concept seemed a bit alien to me but they are just superb and come highly recommended!!!!! When the legs are little tired turn on the power and away you go!!! It gets pretty windy there so that bit extra comes in very handy in a head wind!!! The guesthouse also has a plethora of tourist information to get you started on your trip. Highly recommended.
