We originally booked Centerhotel Thingholt but due to overbooking we also spent a few nights here. Whilst I still prefered Thingholt we had a very pleasant stay here. The location is good - just off the main street so you miss the noise of the busy bars. The location is also handy for the Grey Line ticket office.
We had a deluxe room with an ocean view - whilst I imagine this would be beautiful in the Summertime we could not see much of the ocean for the dark. The room was clean and modern but had little space for our luggage.
The breakfast is okay but the buffet system doesn't really work. Often couldn't get a seat because of how busy it was in the restaurant. Good views from the restaurant though, we stayed over NYE and watched the fireworks from the rooftop.
The spa was nice but one of the steamrooms was broken, there were glasses left around the jacuzzi and the lights flickered. Could be very relaxing and romantic with a bit of upkeep!

Overall we had a lovely stay here and thoroughly enjoyed Iceland. I would look at Thingholt though for a more stylish and central stay.

The room was clean and spacious, but very spartan furnishing, no closet space. Good bed. Nice spa (hot tub/sauna/steam room) in the basement. No lobby to speak of. fron desk staff very nice and helpful with reservation and information.
The carpets in the corridors were dirty and badly in need of refurbishing.
Breakfast buffet choices limited and food overall not very good

Stayed in July 2011 (yeah, I'm a bit late in reviewing, I know...). Hotel was located centrally, was very clean and while not spacious, was certainly adequate in size for our needs - which consisted of sleep, showering and changing clothes!

Check in staff, while not warm, were certainly professional and efficient. We were able to find parking in the hotel's adjacent lot for most of the stay (the sole exception was late Sat nite, and we found on street parking literally across the street). Did not dine there.

All in all, everything we expected, and at a very reasonable price for Reykjavik.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the bay/sea...

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights over New Years Eve. We thought the hotel had an absolutely perfect location and would absolutely stay here again if we were back in Reykjavik. The hotel was very close to main street. We also figured out about halfway through our trip that the hotel was just around the corner from the Grey Line bus tours location. We did a lot of day tours in Iceland and it was really nice to be right near there so that we could walk instead of getting picked up and didn't have to leave quite as early to catch our bus. It was also great that breakfast was included with the hotel.

I've stayed here previously, and was very satisfied so booked this hotel a second time too.
The location is still very good (the hotel has not moved...). Since last time "Harpa" has opened just across the main street. Harpa is the new large culture house of Iceland.
This weekend we got a room on the ground floor, which I never like due to noise. The receptionist asked if we wanted bathrobes for use at the spa in the cellar, which was nice thing to ask at check in.The room was a bit smaller than last time I stayed there.
There were no remote control to the TV, so we had to ask for one, and they said that they would bring one to us...which never happened. We got one after asking once again. The light in the ceiling did not work at all.
There is tiles on the floor, which is a bit cold to walk on during winter. We asked if there were any possibilities to change room during our weekend stay, but it wasn't. It was quite noisy as all talking in the lobby could be heard well inside our room.
The breakfast is served at the top floor. It it strange to see how they have solved (or NOT solved) the logistic of serving people breakfast. There is a buffet, but since the buffet is set up with quite un logical guests are walking back and forth trying to find things. Coffe cups are located at a table in the quite opposite side of the room from were you'll find tea and coffe etc. I have many other examples as well. If the staff have to work in theis way all mornings I'm surprsied they haven't made any changes. The breakfast buffet is quite ordinary. There are some hot dishes, cheese, ham and marmelade, müsli etc. There were no boiled eggs.
It's an OK hotel, but next time I would stay somewhere else.

Hotel is one of a chain of Center hotels all well located in Reykjavik. This one in particular is a 5 minute stroll to the central area of the old town. Everything is within walking distance of the hotel. They have a soothing hot tub/spa located in the basement area of the hotel. Staff was only too happy to open the spa for us in the evening, dim the lights and light all the candles - very romantic and relaxing. Hotel staff was very helpful in suggesting places to see, places to eat and things to do. North American flights arrive early in the morning and even with a 1 hour bus ride from the airport in Keflavik to Reykjavik hotels you arrive by 9:00 a.m. They have an extra charge to get the room this early (about half a nights rate), but it is well worth it as it includes breakfast and the opportunity to catch up on some zz`s before setting out to see the town. Breakfast is included and is a more than adequate hot and cold buffet, including smoked salmon. Breakfast is served in the restaurant area on the top floor - great views of the downtown core and across the bay. In warmer weather I'm sure you could enjoy your breakfast outdoors, but late October was cold and rainy.
