The pre-20th century stuff was best, but it was cool to see photos from the 60s. The Viking-related objects were terrific. They have some small rooms with hands on stuff for kids. The cafe is good.

We took refuge from the rain and wind and discovered an amazing museum that is extremely informative and well thought out. The exhibits are in harmony with the architecture. Attention has been paid to every detail. The audio-guide is superb, with extracts from the local literary tradition that complement and enhance the explanations. There are enough seats, as well as portable stools everywhere. The multimedia stations are fascinating and thorough. The exhibits cover every aspect of life in Iceland throughout the ages. The curators are to be commended. We did not stop for coffee, though the cafeteria was recommended to us.

We had a morning in Reykjavik before our volcano tour, so we wanted to see a museum with a unique Icelandic theme. The National Museum provided a good overview that can be seen and appreciated in 60-90 minutes. The staff was very friendly and helpful and appreciated my attempt to use greetings in Icelandic. It is well worth the cost to get the audio tour guide.

The Icelandic art displayed in this museum is of high quality. The information included made the works more understandable and, therefore, more meaningful. Lunch area was pleasant with some good food choices for lunch or snack.

My third or fourth visit over the years. There is always an interesting special display. The collection is well displayed with historical information in English that is easy to read and follow. If you have questions the staff are friendly and will assist with finding more information for you. The gift shop is very nice and has high quality items and a selection of books. The cafe is small but has interesting and tasty items.
