A well-organized museum that lays out the history of Iceland through objects and artifacts. Starting here would lay a good groundwork for understanding everything else you'll see on your trip. Plus, a great cafe.

As a professional who previously worked in the museum field, this was an unexpected jewel of a museum. The exhibits are creatively designed and portray Iceland's history in an elegant manner.

Nice space with some interesting displays. It is worth a visit and can be completed in about an hour or so. While it does trace the history of Iceland it seemed light on the Vikings - perhaps there is a lack of artifacts from that period. I felt like about 50% of the space was dedicated to the Religious aspects of Iceland life from the 1800's. I don't have a problem with that just making you aware.

This was an incredible museum - the displays are well thought out and organised. The quality of the items on display is superb - hard to imagine such well preserved doors are from a 13th century church, and that the necklace was worn by a woman in the Viking era. The Icelanders are justifiably proud of their history and it shows in this museum. There is a fascinating display of items from the 20th century, donated by museum staff. Don't miss it.

Iceland really knows how to do museums! Place was very easy to find and the building is beautiful on the outside. Receptionist was very friendly and pointed out to use the lockers we could stor our jacket and bags in which was very helpful.

The exhibits are some of the best I have ever seen. All of the descriptions are in English and Icelandic and some have descriptions in French and German as well. The layout and presentation was jaw-dropping and there are lots of items to interact with.

The architecture of the building was incredible as well. The materials used and lighting were visually arresting and the over-all lay-out was that wonderful under-stated beauty of the Scandinavian design.

If you visit Iceland you MUST go here, bar-none.
