“Good compact museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

We walked from our hotel at the harbour and enjoyed a couple of hours in the museum. It's modern and nicely set out, and has well labelled exhibits in English, although we preferred the Skogar folk museum as it has more character, but Skogar is a car journey from Reykjavik. You can hang your many layers of coats up in the cloakroom/locker room downstairs or put bigger bags in one of the free lockers...keys are in the doors ready. It's a little way to walk but not too far and staff are friendly. Enjoyed the silvercraft exhibition very much. Not too overwhelming a place to visit for a couple of hours.

“If you have an extra hour or two...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

We had some extra time our last day in Reykjavik, so we walked to the museum. It's only two floors, and very well laid out, so it doesn't take much time. There are a lot of artifacts from the early church and periods after that, but I had hoped to see more on Viking history.

“Modern and informative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013 via mobile

We walked here from downtown and had jackets and a small backpack, so we were able to stash them into one of the free lockers before heading in. All exhibits are in Icelandic and English so it was easy to read or listen about everything. My favorite part was a video about the 1703 census, where every person and livestock on the island were counted and catalogued. The video gave a lot if info about society on Iceland at the time but also about how history in general looks at society. Overall, we spent about 2 hours at the museum between looking at the permanent exhibit, the temporary silver exhibit, the photography exhibit and the gift shop. Highly recommended if you like museums.

“small and interesting”

We enjoyed our visit to this museum. It helped us understand Iceland much better. Some terrific artifacts, including a handwritten book at Ary, The Wise! in the 12th Century!

“Great displays, including jewelry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

This is a very nice museum to spend an hour or more. The displays reveal the history of Iceland in a very informative manner. Since I love jewelry, I was entranced by the "silver room" with stunning pieces of intricate silver. Nice gift shop as well.
