“Superb Overview of Iceland's History”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

This free modern museum offers an excellent introduction to Iceland and should feature on all tours of those interested to learn about Iceland's development as a nation. The many interactive video presentations in English are very well produced and provide a host of detailed information. Allow at least two hours to see round the exhibits and the walk back to the Icelandair Hotel Natura takes about 20 minutes

“Iceland in one building”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

Despite nearly being shooed away by possibly the only grumpy person in Iceland (I'd arrived in the wind and the rain at 4pm, for a 5pm closing time), this museum rewarded my determination to have a look around.

It traces the history of the country, right from the Settlement in 874AD until the recent independence movement and up to the present day - covering all elements of Icelandic society - cultural, economic, religious and political.

I particularly enjoyed the circle of artefacts from each decade in the 20th century, showing how day-to-day household objects and toys and utensils had developed from one decade to the next. The 70's segment chimed with me, showing Cod fillets in freezer boxes and an early cassette tape recorder.

I was also impressed by the ash cross-section, which clearly showed how much fell on the land after each major volcanic eruption.

An hour was just enough to wheel around the two main floors, taking in the most significant pieces - despite the views of the lady on the reception desk.

She got my change wrong as well...

“Smithsonian-quality exhibitions”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

All labels and interactive displays were either in Icelandic and English or you had the option to choose English. Artifacts are well-displayed, lighting was a little dim in some places but that may be been for conservation purposes. There was a nice flow to the exhibition space. The museum has a coffee shop which opens earlier than the 11a opening of the museum itself. A nice touch since we arrived early and it was cold out (December visit). Entrance is not on the main street but the outside of the building was well-marked.

“Great visual display!”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

I loved this museum because it was a self-paced, artifact heavy exhibit regarding the history of Iceland.

Oh and there is a great little children's nook with Icelandic books and the opportunity to put on some viking gear.
